started working towards the frame mounts for the shackles this evening and got stuff drilled and tapped for set screws. Pulled the turbo off the 3B.
:meh:

You can see that Im trying to keep it low enough to still fit in the garage, though that may not be that easy.

Turbo pic shows the garret versus the TD04 for size.

tubing for shackles burnt in over the weekend, and committed myself to some body work.

I welded some square tube in the shackles I had already made, and found that the tube will hit the frame rail during articulation, so I will keep them to use up front if the length is right, and started building some new ones for the back, only this time I will use flat bar to join them instead of square tube. They'll be beefy regardless though.

looks great!!!

Thanks, Im a little stressed about the body work, I got it almost completely welded in yesterday, but it did warp inwards a bit. I think its probably better if I just remove the box and take it to an autobody place later to have a pro finish it. Id really like to finish it myself, but I dont have the skills, so Ill weld it up and take it to a shop for someone who knows bodywork better to wrap it up. Unless there's anybody with more experience in calgary who wants to drink me beer in the evenings and give me some pointers.

At least the wheel wells will fit the tires and it'll look good when its finished.

well, I need to make a decision about the firewall.

I got the dash stuff out and I need to decide if I want to cut and paste the section of firewall with the clutch steering and brake cutouts over to the other side, and then make a patch out of aluminum and rivet it into the hole, or if I should go hunting for a firewall out of a domestic, which is money and alot of work.

Anybody got an opinion as to whats the easiest way to tackle the firewall??

I also need to find a domestic heater core before I install the LHD dash support I have.

very nice work ... I would think a domestic donnor fire wall would make it ALOT easyer to do

Your probably right. Though Im trying to think of ways to weasel around that.

If I find a domestic, then I have to get everything off the firewall and have the engine out of the way before I start cutting. And the local pick'n pull's wont let you take any power tools, which leaves me with finding and wrecking one in my garage and then getting rid of the rest of the parts. This could get fun.

I would just ask them won't hurt ... Our local pick and pull will cut it out for you for a small price... I have swapped or helped swap a few 40 fire walls and dashes its a lot of work and a whole truck really helps but costs more

huh, well maybe Ill give them a call, but I guess it depends on how much they charge I suppose.

It should only take a couple minutes with a zip disc or two if I could find one with the engine and accesories out of it.

Edit: i called pick'n pull, they said $65 and I am allowed to use a recip saw, but nothing that creates sparks, i.e. torches or grinders. They have two trucks in the yard so I might head down either friday or this weekend to see what shape they are in and if the firewall is accesible.

Just ask about the whole fire wall and dash... Cut the A pullers and floor and bring all home in one piece :D

Sent from outer space via my mind

I probably could do that, though I'm not sure that would be that much quicker, Id have to remove the doors and inner and outer fenders. I was thinking of cutting it at the seam fold and along the wheel wells, then stitching that into my hilux, I really dont want to cut any more sheet metal than that because then I have to start messing with the windshield, and I think the A pillars would be a b!tch to weld in. As well the body work there would be a little better hidden from the view in the engine compartment.

If I pull the dash apart and out of the way, then I can cut from the inside, except for along the fold seam, which I think is doable over top the engine if it happens to still be in place.

I actually also want the section of carpet from the firewall and Ill need the heater core and maybe AC section as mine appears to be RHD specific.

Edit: Ill be out of town for a week, this project probably wont be updated until sometime in 2013.

Well, its been a long time and not much progress, but I have found some time in the evenings again.

Had to get the roof top tent out of the lawn so I built a rack on the hilux, Im gonna try and order white gauge faces for everything, including one for the diesel tach and dual needle boost gauge. It will have aftermarket boost, oil pressure, exhaust (drive) pressure and pyro mounted above the dash when I get it all done.

Got the old RHD firewall cutout and started getting the new/old firewall I got from the junkyard shaped to fill that hole.

Also, I may be side tracking myself a bit with axle options, more to come on that (one day)

got the firewall about half burnt in this evening, wont have time to work on it till the weekend or next week. Also, got some different engine mounts, anchor hydraulic mounts, the use them on some ford motors and cummins 4BT's.

A pic of a pinzgauer portal end compared to a 60 series knuckle ball, I bought a set of front portal boxes and need to grab some rears, thinking about getting some ford 9" low pinions and making a set of one off axles, though the 60 series axles I have are fairly built up and not sure if i want to make axles up later down the road, they will need a lot of work and maybe some custom parts for a disc brake conversion.

I cant get the pinz rear boxes right now, that will be much later.

Also need to figure out primer application for the firewall welds, and I'd liike to "space shuttle" the firewall. ANy of ya reccomend an insulation/sound deadener that would work well on a firewall exterior?
Looking at this right now: http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-foam-acoustical-insulation/=mbgeni in the Heavy-Duty Heat or this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#thermal-insulation/=mbjcwtReflecting in 1" is what Im looking at, I also will be applying cruiser crap to the interior. Any experience with this stuff anybody???

Im thinking I want to use PPG primer for the firewall, though I know nothing about epoxy primers at all and could use some advice about that.

The Machinist over in 60's Tech Cruiser Crapped his interior, it's in the latter half of his build thread IIRC.

Love the truck!

I seen that, I ordered $100 worth of crap for the interior, I think it will be a bit less then I need, but at least I can get the firewall and doors, Ill get more later for what I miss under the carpet.

Also ordered some sound deadener for the hood and firewall, so Ill be getting both sides of the firewall, it has a foil outer to it, so it should be quite reflective.

Found some PPG epoxy primer, its two part and Ill get it painted on eventually. I still need to do some cleanup of the welds on the firewall, but damn its hard to get into some of those spots, die grinder with little flap discs is too big and awkward. I should probably just slap primer on it but I want to clean it up a pinch more first.

Any updates?
