I fired up the ‘79 Cali and she is running well. I initially couldn’t get fuel up to the carb and turned out I had crossed two fuel lines coming from the new tank. I switched them correctly and she fired up.

Detailed Cali. Washed with Dawn and used CLR scrub technique and turned out good especially the roof was in great shape. I washed the original roof cover and will refoam when the top comes off. Engine runs great and she handles tight like a 40 with 124k miles. No brakes that will b next.

Now that the fuel system and coolant hoses are done, I am working on the front brakes. I went all Toyota oem parts from the local dealer. New rotors, caliper rebuild kit, and pads. Calipers were leaking and seized.
What did you use to clean the calipers before painting? Just brake cleaner, or did you acid dip them or do anything to remove the rust?

I did a rough clean with brake cleaner and a brush then soaked the calipers and rusted hardware in Evaporust. It does the best at dissolving the rust. I followed up with a little scotchbrite inside the cylinders to clean up any remaining rough spots.

Brakes are back together. I bought parts from my local toyota parts guy except the axle nuts and washers I bought from cruiser corps. I’m not sure if the spindle nuts had a different thread but the new aftermarket ones were tough threading on. Maybe the spindle threads might have been bad but I used the old one and it worked fine despite a previous repair shop used a screwdriver instead of the 54mm socket. Next I’ll flush the lines and do the bleeding.
