So I have scaled back my rain fly to mirror that of the New expedition RTT rain fly and see how that works and if needed I will add the sides to the tent as well. I have sewed up the meat of the rain fly and did a test fit this morning. Pictures are without the spring poles in place and my wife and I are simply holding up the ends to show what is will look like. Once all four spring poles are in it should be nice and tight. Next step is to place some webbing with clips to attach the rain fly to the tent to keep it from blowing away in heavy winds as well as provide the ability to tighten up the rain fly if needed.

Please see pictures.

very nice !

(my, my, we're quite the little seamstress aren't we....? :D)

I think you'll want the side pieces if you're doing this for rain, no? These windows would be too likely to become sources of ingress... Isn't that the whole point of a serious rain fly? (otherwise one could just put waterproof sealer on the OEM roof section and be done?)

Tell us more about the poles and how they'll fit, please. :)

Zane-

Thanks for breaking ground on this, I would think with a small overhang over the ladder you would be all set.

Looks great man, where did you source the spring poles?

As of last night I have completed the rain fly other than the straps to hold it in place on the sides of the fly. That is the easiest part of the build. It has turned out really well and I think it will do a much better job than the old rain fly that the Moombassa came with. For those who have asked, I hope to be able to give you all more information on the source of the spring poles shortly.

Please see updated pictures.

I finally completed the rain fly last night! I cut and sewed in the webbing for the straps that hold the rain fly in place. This will keep the rain fly from blowing around in heavy winds as well as keep it in place when you fold and unfold the tent. I used adjustable straps as you would find on a backpack shoulder strap so that it can be adjusted pending how the tent is set up. I also pop riveted plastic footman loops to the bottom of the tent for the strap to attach to.

Overall I'm happy with how it turned out and I'm excited to see how it works in the great outdoors. Regardless, it’s got to be better than the original.

Please let me know if any of you have questions.

Looking good man. How did you keep the fly guide poles in on the frame? Drilled a hole?

Very good question. I purchased some 1"x1/4" thick alluminum stock and cut four sections for each corner of the tent at about 3" wide or so. I then rivited those to the base corners of the tent. Then I drilled a hole at an out and upward angle from each corner allowing me to slip in the spring poles. I added the alluminum stock to proved a strong support as the alluminum bar used in the Moombasa is really thin and would not last long with all of that pressure the spring pole delivers.

Very nice! I hate the one that came with it, and it is off most of the time. How about a group buy, hehe. I was trying to figure out how to make a new one. Yours will be a great idea to follow.

I worked with Mel at www.car-top-tent.com and he sells a full set of eight spring poles for $20. I have to say that Mel is one excellent guy, who deserves as much business as he can get. I have yet to hear of anyone having an issue working with him when purchasing a roof top tent or accessories for a RTT.

Matter of fact I just purchased a new ladder from Mel with the 12" extension to replace the original one that came on the Mombassa. Once that is installed I think this tent will be perfect!

How much did the new ladder cost you?

Complete ladder replacements are $52 plus shipping. The 12" extensions are an extra $45. Shipping for me was around $15, but that may be different pending were you live.
