Kevin and I did my Eaton ~7 years ago with 15K with excellent results. I just changed the fluid and went with 20K (easier to find) and no noticeable change.

20k it shall be! To clarify, did you adjust the target temp? Looking like the eaton clutch can only have the fluid changed.
I'm getting all the parts together to change hoses and and do a coolant flush... figured this would be the icing on the cake for my cooling system update before the weather gets too hot
125°
procedure the same as for the aisin?
@Tools R Us do you have any info on the temp setting on the eaton clutch? Or is a fluid swap all that's needed?

Hello everyone I need some help here too. I have a 94 and a 95. The 94 had the black hub drained it and put 40 ml of 20k oil back into it. On a hot trail here in AZ outside temp of about 112* F the temp went up to 226*F and AC shut off. Than I did a blue hub I got from someone else and put it in my 94 I did the adjustment on tht too but the lowest it will open too is like 144* fill the one with 30k oil and the car still heats up to 221*F at 102*F outside temp. Now I have a eaton clutch too tht I want to try out but just like some post earlier mention I don’t know how to adjust the temp on it. Ima put 40 k oil in it. How much do you guys think it’s a good amount ? And if this does not work could it be a bad head gasket on both of them?
Everything is new on both of them. Water pumps from amazon aisin, thermostats from Toyota, new caps from Toyota Also one radiator is new from Napa the other one just got flushed. Running green coolant on both of them.have you tried other things like flushing your system, check your water pump, thermostat, radiator cap etc?
Hello Michael the belts are about a year old and yes they are tightHi, Are the belts new and tight ? Mike
bump for the thread, looking at doing my fan clutch. The hub is silver, with a green dot, looks to be eaton but I will have to pull it out and inspect.
If it is, should I go with a 17k cst oil? I am in AZ and it gets HOT

Phil, when I opened up my Eaton years ago, there was a progression of stages to the gate opening.
Do you recall what exactly happens at 125 degrees?
Like, what stage of opening do I want to adjust to happen at 125?

Thx for the reply. Pm your info and where your shop is at. I would definitely bring it by if it’s here in AZ. Because I already did all new cooling components and flushed both of them. So I getting a bit scared. I really hope I’m just not doing the clutch the right way or maybe they’re to old. I’m really thinking about ordering a land tank just to rule the clutch out. But ima be really upset if I pay $250 and the problem still thereFor Eatons, I typically fill with 20k minimum, per what Kevin and I did to my Eaton and what I watched him do on several others. In fact, one is sitting on the bench right now draining which will get 20k tomorrow.
The Eaton doesn’t have set screws and a plate to adjust as the Aisin clutches have, instead you need to bend the spring slightly to get the desired results. That said, I find the Eaton usually works in the “good enough” range. After all, it lasted on the vehicle for 20+ years, so it’s likely to work well with fresh fluid.
If the opening isn’t in a range where I like to see it, I tweak the spring until it is. Typically shooting for a first opening of 120° for the small hole. This is a number Kevin and I discussed a few times while picking his brain on the subject. Given that he did hundreds of clutches for over a decade, I’m sure he eventually settled on numbers which gave the best results.
Kevin always tuned to the first opening of the valve. On the Eaton, this would be the triangle.
Sounds similar to a couple 80s we’ve had in the shop recently; a fan clutch isn’t likely to solve your issues. It will help, but the cooling system likely needs some sort of maintenance, whether that be new components, a flush, or both. It seems this year I’m seeing more and more 80s with cooling systems in very subpar condition. This is likely always the case, but more noticeable now that I’m there full-time.
If you’d like to bring your 80 by Kevin’s shop and chat with us about it, I’d be glad to walk you through tuning the fan clutch and anything else. I’ll warn you that typically comes with us crawling all over your truck and looking at other things as well as a pretty healthy BS session.
I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same...
