Last night Pete stopped by for a beer so since he was there we took... off that body flipped it over and threw it on some saw horses... I need to get that scuffed up, primer shot, then I am going to SEM just the wheel wells and paint the rest body color. I was going to SEM the whole thing but 2 reasons why I am not... 1. I thought it would help keep down the noise, but since I have decided to not ever put my hard top back on it really does not matter. #2 paint is cheaper and will still look as nice, and also I need to get some more practice painting before the stuff you will see every time you look at it happens...

scuffed the bottom of the tub and shot primer, then shot green last night... I have to say I am not happy at all with how it turned out... I knew it would not be completly smooth because I did not sand the primer at all.. and that is fine, it is the bottom of the tub... but what I am not happy about is there are some bubbles (very small) that were in the from part of the tub?? what causes them? too much gun pressure??? dust?? I was carful to wipe this all down before but I did not wipe it down between coats or between the primer and paint?? should I have??? please post up your thoughts??? I need way more practice painting... this will never fly on the body!!!

Still have to shoot the SEM on the wheel wells... probably give it a few days to dry before I try to mask off anything with tape.. no sense fxxxing up my s***ty paint job more..

I'm way out on a limb here, but could it be outgassing of your primer? How long did you wait before shooting color after primer?

20-30 min... Which I think the can said 15-20 min, I would have to check again… it was dry to the touch. My only reason for not thinking this is the bubbles happened immediately, not after sitting for a while… after a while some of them did pop..

I can't really tell from the pics, but it could be "fish eye" which is usually caused by silicone based materials like armor all or brake cleaner, motor oil etc.. Basically, what happens is the paint doesn't want to stick to the surface because of the silicone no matter how much you sand or clean. My father has owned a body shop for 35 years, and if I even step foot in his place with a bottle of armor all he's cursing me like a truck driver. It's a painters kryptonite. One good thing is you didn't paint the rest of the tub. Ask the autobody supply store you go to for fish eye remover, but that's trial and error. Always start out with it light in the mix and go up from there. If you put in too much it will orange peel on you. You also have to use it in the base as well as the clear. Hope this helps (if that's the case)!!

would the primer still stick to the tub... because that went on with no problems...

It is most likely from you primer still reacting.Wait longer in between priming and painting like 24 hrs If you want the paint to look real good prime then put a guide coat on then wet sand wait 24 hrs then wash and tack cloth then paint it will look like glass it will be so smooth. remember a good paint job is in the prep work put in the extra elbow grease you will not regret it.

got a bunch of little stuff done last night... all stuff to get ready for bolting down that tub... had to grind down that transfer case saver (messed up my CAT yellow paint job )... had to dig through my boxes of s*** to find the rubber plugs for the bellhousing... this seems so minimal but I spent like an hour looking for it... :D I knew I had 2... one good one and one that was junk.. think I could find the good one.. hehe... it was in the last place I looked... yea and a bunch of other little stuff too... :D

My dad has offered to spend his saturday helping me boltup that tub... (sure there will be a few adult beverages and good times had also) so I plan to take lots of pics as I dont think anyone else has who has put one of these on has... they come with a DVD and I have watched it many times (god they need to update that DVD, it is really old and poorly done) but I suppose it gets the job done... so hope to have some good pics and a small write up on for you by early next week....

Have a good weekend all!!!!!!!!!

ok... I did get these working last night also...... remeber Steve put the GM plug in there... had to hook a ground to the frame for each light and also one on my wiring harness that I forgot..... they all work... tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and blinkers (although they dont actually blink yet, :D got to fix that, probably just low on blinker fluid I would guess... and I have not hook up the blinker fluid reserve yet, that will make a huge difference. :bang:) ...

Thanks for your help again steve!!

Glad you are making progress bud....hope I can get up there again soon!

You were talking about the 'spots in your paint'....

If you are not running a filter at the inlet side of your spray guns, you are only asking for problems bud.

I did think I figured out my paint problem as I remember changing to one of my dirty hose (none filtered and had an oiler on it for a while) It did not even cross my mine as I had not used it in a while but that has to be it... I am not going to go back sand those bubble out (about 10) and respray it. They are on the under side, most of them will be covered anyway where the body meets the cowl, as there are none on the rear half of the body... plus the primer is still good under there... plus it is alum... so it will not rust anyway...

I will be getting one of those filters as a safety thing... good and cheap advise... thanks!!!

Got a ton done this weekend... My dad came up on Saturday morning and we got that tub on.. It probably took us 5-6 hours in total. Not bad. We had a great time... listen to the oldies station and had a few beers. Pete also stopped by later on. We were all really impressed with how well it fit considering it is made 1500 miles away in a jig and shipped to your door.. It did take some time with clamps and wood blocks to get each side to fit… had to hold with the clamps so it would not move until you had the bolts tight... The worst part of the whole deal what the SikaFlex (glue) it is basically like tar and does not dry fast… the tube they send me the back half was dry so I could not use the gun to get it out… ended up cutting it open and using my fingers (with gloves of course) but as soon as we set the tub on there it squirted out so it was everywhere… and when you drilled a hole of course it got on the bits and the bolts… still got it all over my hands and can not get it off… Lucky for me MN chicks dig dudes with black tar on their hands…. :grinpimp:

First two pics are of the edges of the cowl… I wanted to show how you have to cut a notch in there where the two floors meet up..

Pic #3 Tcase saver ground down to just fit…

Pic #1 the dreaded glue.. it also helps to seperate the alum and the steel... I used alot.. I hope I never have to take this tub off :D

Pic #2 tub set on and clamped.. we also used a C clamp and a 2x4 on the outside edge to get both seems to line up perfectly.... it was a great trick... (my dads) I did not get a pic :whoops:

Pic #3 just the back to see how it fits on the frame... this is after we are all done. the tub comes with all the mounting hardware and also the body mounts.

pic #1 put on my rock sliders so I could see how they fit... you can also see the seem... the black is excess glue that will be sanded out of there

Pic #2 same thing and you cand see the doors on in this pic also
