Sometimes progress is measure just by a simple breath
Today was a teeter-totter first I was going to work on a little then I wasn't. Then I was going to take the day off tomorrow then I wasn't then I was. But tonight I got sucked in and got the water pump off of the old motor then decided to go with the new one with a fresh coat of paint. And the thermostat and housing went on.

I found out that I had 2 water pump bolts flipped so every time I adjusted the alternator I would loosen up the water pump causing a leak. The reason that the fan and pulley aren't on is because I have to do some trimming on the alternator mount bolt for the pulley to not rub.

Nice progress Dan. Sometimes these rigs dictate to us the schedule upon which they will agree to return to service. Of course, when we are in the moment, it can be frustrating when things don't go on our schedule, but slow and steady and Uma will be back on the road in no time and she will be much better for it.

Not exactly where I wanted to be but did get the pilot bearing from the new motor cut out. New pilot bearing in bell housing, fly wheel, friction disc, and pressure plate, clutch fork, and throw out bearing. The starter is in. I would have tried to put the motor in but the motor mount bolts are different sizes from the old to the new motor.

After trying to fight it by myself for most of the morning I got help from a fellow cruiser owner. Between the of us we couldn't get the engine on the transmission. So today a coworker, the other cruiser head, and a friend were able to get the engine and transmission in

After the work party I started to reassemble everything back together.

New oil spark plugs and wires from the old motor, heater hose, and ignitor.

Header, intake, fan clutch, alternator. Hopefully 🤞 I can finish this up tomorrow.

I'm riding, I'm loading up my pistol
I'm riding, I really got a fistful
I'm riding, I'm shining up my saddle
I'm riding, this snake is gonna rattle

I'm back in the saddle again

Excellent. Won't be long now! :steer:

I'm wondering about your coil location/air cleaner - What air cleaner setup are you planning? I saw an air cleaner in the background in one of your posts recently that would go where the coil is now.

Well you were right I cant have my coil right there as the new 2F air cleaner sits right there. So now I am going to mount it to the fire wall on the back side of the glove box. Right now my bigger issue is the air cleaner to the carb is still about a half inch apart and they don't line up. my even bigger problem is getting all of the transmission linkages back into the normal and proper locations. The '"manifolds" yes I know one is a header are completely bolted into place the carb is hooked up the fuel is plumbed. The air cleaner is on. I do think that I can get the radiator in and the grill today.

Initially, when we did the desmog and ignitor extraction, I re-mounted the coil on the passenger fender. Later DUI eliminated the coil altogether. The fender location makes it easy to work on and its out of the way. Just 2cents worth of random opinion.

Dan,

Carb/air cleaner not lining up. Is that up/down or a left right thing?

If left/right… Could you shim the bracket with some washers between the engine and cleaner bracket to adjust it - that way they would be hidden and nobody would know

City racer sells a carb to cleaner spacer for desmogged carbs.

It is a little bit of both

When I was running an aftermarket carb I needed a wider spacer - carb to air cleaner. I always loosely tightened the air cleaner to carb adjustment 1st, then adjusted fire with the remaining air cleaner assembly. If you get a chance in the near futeure, can you post up a couple pics of your fitment issue?

Caveat: Even with the correct Jim C rebuilt carb and a thin rubber gasket, I still follow the same procedure for tightening down the air cleaner assembly.

Your almost home.

I ran into the same problem after reassembly. If I recall, after separating the air cleaner, I mounted the lower half very loosely onto the valve cover. Just a couple threads in each mounting position. Then added the top piece of the cleaner loosely without tightening down. I started tightening the wing nut on the threaded carb rod until I had loose contact with the base (still loosely fitting). Then I started with the two wing nuts on top of the main air cleaner body. Tightened everything until snug. Attach the two halves with the clips. Tighten the valve cover mounting points snug. Finish tightening the wing nut on the carb stud. Wing nuts on the main body. Tighten valve cover attachments.

What I found by doing it this way is the air cleaner “form fitted”. The tabs “cold formed/bent” a little and the airlcleaner settled a little. YMMV . 😁

I’m going to add a couple pics. No hijack intended. Just for reference on the two spacers I’ve used and the lower section of the air cleaner mounted.
