I want to thank everyone for letting Michael and me join in. We had a great time.
The group consisted of Brian (goodtimes) in the Jeep, Chuck from New Mexico in a Tacoma, Brett in a Tacoma, Spike and Mike in the white LC, Alvin in his newly Durabaked LC (looks good), Michael in the K5 and myself in the FJ40. Box Canyon was beautiful, a bit narrower than I remembered from 10 years ago. Someone had freshly defaced rock walls with blue spray paint

. Chuck had to leave afterwards and the group headed to a playhill. Then onto Martinez Canyon (I really dig the grave at the entrance); after the Cabins, the first rock garden initially intimidated me, but with encouragement and showing me a line for short wheelbase (thanks Brian), I got into the groove of things. Really beautiful scenery out there, but I was much too busy to take pictures. And it was so cold up higher with the wind.
Not having done the Martinez trail before, I had to get out several times to inspect obstacles on the climb out (sorry Alvin if I held you up, thanks for the patience), but the 'Cruiser did really well. The steering (manual) is much easier after going to the narrower tires (highway behavior is better, too). I still have to get more experience when to use the front locker, but thanks to my spotters, no damage at all and no "hairy" situations. I did run out of courage on two occasions: an off-camber spot on the switchbacks and the bypass to "the luge", Michael drove those for me. I tumbled and fell attempting to walk down that steep hill, it's almost unbelievable a vehicle can make it. We met a broken rock buggy on the way out out of the canyon; on his right front, everything from the knuckle out was laying about in pieces. He was going to have to spend the night and wait for his buddies to bring tools and parts to fix it up.
The group split back at the playhill, with Alvin and Brian heading back out Box Canyon, and we others made it out with Brett leading on Mineral Mountain Road. The only casualty was a taillight on the K5, taken out (unneccessarily) on Martinez Mine road

.
Thanks again and hope to see you all on another trail.
