Hi Everyone! Figured I'd start keeping track of my build here. Figuring this will be a mild build compared to my previous efforts, so it won't be too exciting :). The goal will be to have a weekend trail runner/rock climber - but keep it a comfortable daily driver at the same time. So here are the stats:

2005 GX470
152k miles
KDSS
No Nav

When purchased, while it had fairly complete service records on the Carfax, there was no sign of a timing belt change - just a timing belt check when they changed the water pump at 112k. Why on earth they didn't just change the belt is beyond me. So the first week I had it, I had the belt changed.

The first thing I did was remove the running boards

Next, I chopped my cab mounts, flattened the pinch welds, modified some plastic, added some G2 1.25 spacers, and put on some 285/70/17's with no lift. Making the tires clear with no lift is paramount to making sure it won't rub while flexing on the trails.

Mission accomplished

Bilstein 5100's are on order, along with the 2.5" Toytec springs for the front, and I'll trick the bags in the rear for the short term. Also ordered some SPS control arms to allow me to remove the wheel spacers and keep my stock wheels - which I really like since they are the gunmetal version. So that should be the next update in a few weeks. In the meantime, I'll be hunting for some sliders and skids.

Prior to the GX, I built up a 2004 Grand Cherokee. While it was extremely flexy, and awesome on the trails, it was a handful on narrow winding roads, and highway speeds. Never mind the constant problems that never ended.

And prior to the GC, was the one that got away. My biggest regret was selling my supercharged Tacoma, double locked on 35's. Great on the trails, and great on the streets (aside from loud and unbalanced tires).

Been wanting to get back to a Toyota again ever since, and the GX fit the bill perfectly, especially with the 3 row seating to accommodate the 3 kids :)

That's a sharp GX, @madtoy and sounds like a good plan - I'll look forward to following along!

Where in NC are you? (I'm in the Raleigh area.)

Thanks little_joe. I'm in Mooresville. We have quite a few members in our off road group in the Raleigh area too.

Which group?

Are those the Hankook ATM's on your GX? I have them now, considering moving to a larger size/stronger load rating.

Welcome ... sounds like youve done this before ha ha .. love seein another family man in an offroading gx ...
I have 3 myself (4,3,&1)
One reason I bought my lexus (coming from Silverados all my life) was to get into a hobby and camping life style that I could take my family on adventures and also fill my car guy needs ...
And def earns me points with my 4 yro son who loves riding with me and being pick from school in the cool car with big metal bumpers

We have a Facebook group called Daily Driver Off-Roaders. It started off as mostly FJ's and some Tacomas, but has evolved into just about every make and model (no Hummers though :)).

Yes, they are the Hankook ATM's. I've mostly run mud tires in the past, and end up hating my truck because of the noise and balance issues. I'm determined not to make the same mistakes with this one. The Hankooks are just as smooth and quiet as the stock street tires it seems, so I'm happy with the choice so far. They also have 3ply sidewalls in the 285/70 size.

Yep. I used to take the wife and 2 boys with me in the Tacoma all the time. But once my daughter was born, there wasn't enough room for everyone. So that ended, along with selling the camper since we couldn't all fit in the tow vehicle :/.

Also started looking at your thread for parts - and waiting to see some info on the hidden winch and sliders (KDSS) :)

My 14 year old likes that too, but he keeps asking when it becomes his lol

I bought the GX while the wife and kids were up in NY for the week after Christmas, so she had no idea I was getting one. I was either gonna be served divorce papers when she got back, or sent to a 'retreat'. Turns out she loves it! Only problem is, she referred to it as 'ours' :/

yeah i tried to get my wife to trade her junk Enclave in for a gx but she likes it too much ...
so i ended up trading in my duramax and got it for myself ...
being that we sold our camper aswell and i wasnt in a hunting lease any more hauling tractors all the time ...
one of the best decisions iv ever made

So here is the question I have about sliders. I know it seems no one makes sliders to fit the GX with KDSS, however they do now make sliders that fit the 150 platform 4Runner with KDSS. Is the frame rails on the 150 the same as the 120? Seems the Prado 150/120 skids are interchangeable.

And that said, wouldn't it make more sense for slider manufacturers to make them fit the KDSS vehicles, since if it fits KDSS, it should also fit non KDSS? Seems there's a decent market out there for KDSS specific sliders to make it worth a small change in design to fit both.

Sliders are usually the first piece of armor I get, since I do use them quite a bit on the trails I ride. Just no longer have a welding machine, so can't easily modify the non-KDSS sliders to fit.

If you need pics and measurements, I can certainly try to help. From what I can see, it's only the middle leg that would be the challenge. I have to look again and see where it would make sense to move that leg to. But I also don't know where the non kdss middle leg bolts up. I can't find any pics that actually show the attachment points, so I can compare to that location on the KDSS.

i have 4* legs on mine just evenly spaced but its not necessary ... many only have 3

Yep - 3 would be fine, unless you're rock bouncing. I had 4 on my Tacoma, but only bolted 3 of them up. And they saw a fair share of pounding on rocks with no issues at all. So I would be fine with running 3 on the GX.

I've only seen one GX on the trails, that rode with us a few years ago. Secretly wanted one ever since :)

So I'm putting my lift on tomorrow. One thing I want to be prepared to do afterwards, is calibrate the KDSS. It already leans an inch on the driver side, so not sure how the lift will affect that. But for the life of me, I can't find the valves to open. All pics I seem to find are of the 4Runner, which seems a bit different than the GX. Anyone know exactly where to look on the GX?

Lift is on. Bilstein 5100's with 2.5" Toytec springs in front, and airbag trick in rear for now. I'll be doing the rear conversion soon though. Also added some SPS UCA's and removed the spacers.
