Hi Everyone! Figured I'd start keeping track of my build here. Figuring this will be a mild build compared to my previous efforts, so it won't be too exciting
. The goal will be to have a weekend trail runner/rock climber - but keep it a comfortable daily driver at the same time. So here are the stats:
2005 GX470
152k miles
KDSS
No Nav
When purchased, while it had fairly complete service records on the Carfax, there was no sign of a timing belt change - just a timing belt check when they changed the water pump at 112k. Why on earth they didn't just change the belt is beyond me. So the first week I had it, I had the belt changed.
The first thing I did was remove the running boards
Next, I chopped my cab mounts, flattened the pinch welds, modified some plastic, added some G2 1.25 spacers, and put on some 285/70/17's with no lift. Making the tires clear with no lift is paramount to making sure it won't rub while flexing on the trails.
Mission accomplished
Bilstein 5100's are on order, along with the 2.5" Toytec springs for the front, and I'll trick the bags in the rear for the short term. Also ordered some SPS control arms to allow me to remove the wheel spacers and keep my stock wheels - which I really like since they are the gunmetal version. So that should be the next update in a few weeks. In the meantime, I'll be hunting for some sliders and skids.
Prior to the GX, I built up a 2004 Grand Cherokee. While it was extremely flexy, and awesome on the trails, it was a handful on narrow winding roads, and highway speeds. Never mind the constant problems that never ended.
And prior to the GC, was the one that got away. My biggest regret was selling my supercharged Tacoma, double locked on 35's. Great on the trails, and great on the streets (aside from loud and unbalanced tires).
Been wanting to get back to a Toyota again ever since, and the GX fit the bill perfectly, especially with the 3 row seating to accommodate the 3 kids
