To keep the reservoir from going empty. Just like brakes, if any air gets in the system, it can be a pain to get out. Air in the pump could damage it.

I see. So a full and thorough flush isn't a thing. Just bleed as instructed and move on.
 
You can thoroughly flush, but you'll need to keep the system topped with clean fluid as you do it. So a "flush" in the sense that you empty the system, then fill up with new fluid, is not advisable. But just as with brakes, if you can suction some old fluid out of the reservoir and replace with new fluid, it will reduce the amount of old fluid you need to bleed out.

And I'm having trouble with the socket situation for the globes. 21mm and 13/16mm are too tight. 22mm has a slight amount of give. Whats this grounding down business? Sorry I just don't want a nightmare on my hands after I start.

The grinding is to reduce the chamfer on the end of sockets that have a rounded lip. That allows the socket to fit a little deeperI. I found the 13/16 socket to be a nice snug fit. You should be able to tap it on with a hammer. It does not sound like you need to grind it.
 
Another option is to put a 3/8-1/2” hole in the red circle and use a flat end punch and hammer in a counterclockwise direction to knock it loose. This is what I had to do to remove the accumulator stuck onto the KDSS valve I dissected that was riddled with cancer.

2 came out no issues.
1 needed a twist socket
1 needed a hole like this one.

Bled each end out for air, then continued to bleed it & feed it simultaneously til the black / brown fluid started looking dark reddish.

Couldnt really tell the reservoir level. Loaded in about 1 2.5L can with plenty of spillage.

Everything seems to be working wonderfully.

Got back in there today and did the fluid flush.

Sucked everything out of the reservoir.
Dropped the tire and backlit the tank to check the levels.
Bled each corner til they were pink. Raising and lowering after each one to circulate the pink lemonade. Didn’t take very long.
Kept adding to the res to make sure it was max at L height.

Closing the book on this project.
 
SQOD: So I ran out of time and have to stop my wrenching half way through swapping my original globes (did fronts) on my 2009 lx570 w 261k…. I’m assuming it will remain bouncy until I do the rears also?

It’s still bouncy and trying to manage my own fears/expectations.

Gosh those rear single bolts on the oem protection took an absurd amount it time to get off. Might need some more tools before reinstalling them…

I left the rear bolts on. Not worth the time. The bar bends down and you can wriggle the globes free.
 
Got a little unusual shake on the road today after all said and done. Maybe some bubbles? I really bled the crap out of this thing though. I think it’s all placebo at this point. What a jam up. Trying to shift strut comfort levels thinking I feel the difference. Was expecting a magic carpet. Oops

Well I plan to answer my own question one evening this week. Hoping the bounce will be eliminated finally once I have four new globes. Fingers crossed.

Even one globe having a collapsed diaphragm can have significant effects on ride quality. So yeah, I wouldn't judge until you get them all changed and the system bled.

Not sure if you saw this tip, but for anyone about to tackle this: put a floor jack under your breaker bar when you have it positioned on the globe. Put the slightest amount of pressure on the bar to keep it from slipping off the globe.
 
Jumping in with the others tackling this issue. I replaced globes and have bled system 2 times still bumpy as heck. Could my rear height sensors be bad by chance e? All the way low and all high pics attached

Fresh globes and fresh fluid but still bumpy leaves only the bleed. If your fluid truly is new, you can put it back in after a filter. . .

Another thing to try is a lot of up H to L cycles, like 20. Then bleed.
