I wanted to try tall and skinny really bad and actually mounted the ST Maxx's 235/85/16s. Too narrow for the factory rims... So I opted for their 285s to replace my 295 Terra Gs. They are more aggressive and a lot louder than the TGs but I feel more confident running the washboards because of the Kevlar sidewalls. BigO folks sa y that they are the favorite choice of the oil rig workers and that they have not seen a sidewall failure yet.

Thanks for the review. The TerraGrrapplers are a quiet tire. I had them on my Jeep.
Nice looking LC. What lift are you running in the bottom picture, if any at all?

Tires are mounted

I just got home from having the new tires mounted. Only a few miles but they rode smooth. I cant wait to see how they perform off pavement.
So here they are. 285 75r16 Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx on stock suspension with AHC set to high, neutral, and low.

Bretthn,
Great photos and info on some of these lesser known areas of NC. I am just outside of Reidsville NC and as soon as I decide and pick up my 80 or 100 me and the family look to try out some of these areas. Nice build also!!

Looking good! It's a pretty neat feeling sleeping that far of the ground. And in some camping spots you can get a great view from your bed when you see over bushes and trees.

Simple fridge slide

I couldn't justify paying $300+ for a tray and a set of hinges so I just picked up some 100# drawer slides for $15 and mounted them to some scrap wood and angle iron I had laying around. It will work until I decide what our needs are for a drawer/organization system. Sorry for the crappy pictures. The humidity today was crazy and every time I stepped outside to take pictures my lens would fog up. For the photographers out there, what do you do to prevent that or solve it? Will post some better pictures later.

By the way, we have been using the fridge for the last couple trips and it has been an awesome addition to our adventure gear! It has also been pretty handy for taking lunch and drinks to work and for keeping cold refreshments for after mountain bike rides.

The condensation comes when your camera/lens is cooler than the ambient air and the moisture level is high.

If your camera's a DSLR remember that the condensation can be occurring inside and out.

Alternative - move to Adelaide: driest state capital city in Aus. ;-) or come wheeling in the Simpson Desert.

Thanks. Good luck finding an 80 or 100. It is worth the wait and extra effort to find a good one.
If you still have the 4runner, a few of us are doing some exploring in Boone next Saturday. Shoot me a pm for the details.

Recent trip

Made a day trip with an awesome group of people last saturday. We were exploring some backroads in Boone, NC.
We all had a blast. There were seven vehicles in total:
4runner
60 series Land Cruiser
GX470
JK Rubicon
H3
LX470
Small Ford Excursion
The only vehicle to get stuck was the Rubicon.. but he was stuck in 2wd due to a linkage issue and some very poor luck.

One tree in the way but we made it around. Even with the AHC in low and the tires aired down to 6psi I could not clear. All the other vehicles made it underneath. The GX with a rooftop tent and 285s made it under but 3 of us had to stand on the rear bumper to compress the suspension enough.

The entire trip and all pictures were on public roads.
I have to give credit for these pictures to the others in the group. I had my daughter with me and didn't take many myself.

Damn man thanks for the posts. I am picking up my LX470 tomorrow and I hope to see you on the trails. I am jealous of you ARB cooler. I also see you have a Mazda5 as well. Guess we have similar tastes in vehicles. Good job on the build so far.

Similar taste if you end up loving your LX and hate the Mazda. The Mazda5 is a great concept, just poorly executed when it comes to quality. Make sure to post some pictures once you have your new LX.

I think it's hard to compare the quality of an LX with a Mazda...

I am not comparing the Mazda to the LX.. that would be too obvious. I have had many cars by many manufacturers over the years and this particular Mazda has components failing at 60k that I would not expect to replace on another vehicle at 200k.
The problem is the car is built on the Mazda3 platform and they didnt even beef up the suspension components for the additional ~1000 pounds. Same exact part number for shocks, brakes, bushings etc...

So the handheld cb did not work too well as expected. What is everyone using to mount their antennas? I am looking at the firestick adjustable hood mount but wondering how sturdy it is and what kind of clearance there is for the coax?
