Hey all,

I'm new here (been lurking for a while) and I've searched this topic exhaustively but haven't found all the answers yet.

I'm in between an 04-06 LX 470 or 05-07 GX 470. Uses will include:

-Towing 21ft travel trailer (around 4,000lbs)

-Overlanding

-Moderate off roading (planning on lift + tires + sliders etc.) but will wheel it stock for a while first.

Between the two, which would you choose? I'm leaning towards the GX due to the 1-2 better MPG and higher towing capacity. Thoughts?

LX470... instead of the GX470 I'd get a Tundra or F150, or even a 4Runner with way less miles for the same price.

Also, Toyota Land Cruiser in the same years at the LX470 is basically the same SUV.

Thanks for the feedback. I've already had 2 F150s and LOVED them. I had 2 tundras, the 04 was great, the 08 sucked. I really want to stick with a more luxury ride (I'm coming from a 2013 Ford F350 Dually Platinum and got spoiled). I also want something a hair smaller for the tighter trails of CO. I've been in trucks for 10 years and am ready for an SUV as my needs have evolved. I'm more in need of interior cabin space for dogs and gear than I am a bed to use.

I'm not so sure about finding a 4Runner with way less miles for the same price. I found my GX with way less miles and for less money than similar year 4runners ('05). In Colorado at least the 4Runner goes for more than the GX from what I had found.

As for the ride, the Land Cruiser will still be basically the same truck. No AHC, but if you lift it that's getting tossed anyways and you'd end up with the same ride on the same lift. Less memory seats and some random other things after the AHC is tossed the only difference is the badge.

Depends where you are. No idea what prices are in CO, but there are hundreds of 4Runners around me and no GX470s, but he wants something with leather and stuff anyways (all of which the LC has) so it's moot at this point.

I think you will like the GX for the Colorado Trails. Smaller is nicer in some ways. It's plenty big inside IMHO. Very Airy feeling. I would lean towards the GX over the LX/LC. Lower mileage for lower cost. Around here 4Runners sell at a premium. I was able find a nice GX for what I could find a 4Runner. Most the 4Runners were beat up. GX's are in better shape.

Good luck.

Yeah, I don't think that's gonna happen either.

IMO you can't really go wrong with either one, but I chose a GX (and then sold it a while later, and will buy another one).

The LX should have a higher tow rating, and will have heavier duty axles and components than the GX. The LX, or equivalent Land Cruiser will do everything you are looking for, other than be small and nimble on the tighter trails. I like the feeling of more power from the lighter, smaller GX, but I wouldn't want to pull a heavy load with it. I would drive both and see what you prefer driving wise. If possible, hook up your trailer on the test drive and see how you like both, then let that help you decide.

Thanks co4wheel. That's what I was figuring, too. I can't find a 4runner in decent shape for the same price, anyway. GX470s seem to have been mall runners. Appreciate the feedback from a fellow Coloradan.

All of those options are all downgrades compared to the GX. I don't think there is a better bang for your buck on the market than the GX470. V8/4wd 4Runners are somewhat rare and expensive to find clean/low mileage (Same with the 100 series lc), F150 is a ford, Tundra's are pricey and don't ride or drive nearly as nice imo.

The LX does not have a higher tow rating. The GX actually has a higher rated payload capacity.

I looked at both lx and gx, as well as 4r's. I found a cream puff 2008 gx, with full dealership service documentation up until the lady traded it in. Price was comparable to a same year 4r, and had the v8, towing package (with 6500lb hitch), 7 pin, etc. They are "usually" maintained far better than a 4r, in better shape, and are a pleasure on the road. I didnt like the dash or visibility on the 4r,and the interior just looked cheap to me. The ivory interior reflects a lot more heat than my oak interior on my lx450. The GX is very spacious inside, and in stock form, I averaged 20.9 mpg on the highway (flat land along the coast). Replacing the expensive bits (air ride, ahc, etc) would be done by removing them after failure, and going conventional suspension. Only two concerns to me are the ML nav/hvac panel, and the sealed transmission. Both can be overcome though.

before you pick a model year 100 series, look at slee's 100 series tutorial. Its got the various differences between the years, as well as the lc-lx differences. Id go with a 5spd auto over a 4spd, as well as one with the vvti engine (i think 05 or 06 and newer).

Good Luck

wheelbase on the LX and the higher base curb weight makes it better at towing larger things.

He is only towing 4000lbs.

Weight isn't the only thing to consider when towing. Towing livestock, for example, results in a much higher COG of the trailer which makes it more unruly to tow than the same weight on a flatbed. The major consideration for travel trailers is wind. Longer wheelbase and weight of tow rig is better for stability.

correct, I meant larger as in a 21' trailer....you catch a cross wind and the 100 will hold up better due to width, wheel base, and weight.

I have both platforms . I get 14mpg now after the lift and tires on the GX from 15.4 stock while 12.5 on my LX with the lift and tires and 13 on my LC. I like my GX for its size, the lower weight and the vvti engine. I keep driving both 100s though as a daily driver since I prefer the ride and handling of both of them compared to the GX. I tow with the 100 and use it for long trips and overlanding. My 98 feels lighter and responsive compared to the LX though plus it has the rear locker. Huge aftermarket support for the 100. I will have to sell one of my 100s soon since I just bought my wife a new car and will probably keep the Rx as a daily driver since gas will go up soon. If gas will not be an issue, I will sell the RX. You will be satisfied with both platforms. Cheers

Thanks everybody. Are both the LX and GX all time all wheel drive or is that just the GX?
