hey,
What's the loudest possible exhaust to put on a petrol 4.5L 80 series?
Cheers

Time to come in from under the hot sun, have a beer and knock off the few remaining brain cells and then come up with an even better follow up question... :slap:

cheers,
george.

Watch any of the Mad Max movies and copy what they did:

Or, maybe one of these Flowmaster designs:

Whatever it is, it's gonna be excruciatingly painful to be within a half mile of, because the I-6s sound like chit.

Better to keep the tone to a whisper and research the stupidest automotive technology I've ever heard of, being a synthesized interior exhaust tune playing in sync with the skinny pedal.

I second the poor sound of a loud I-6. Of course this is a personal view.

Every motor I-4, V6, I-6, V8, V10 & V12 has it's own distinct sound due to displacement, firing order, compression, valves per cylinder, and other factors. A Ford, Chevy, Mopar, Toyota V-8 all sound a little different but all sound like V-8s. An I-6, besides ultra high performance/ compression ones like in an BMW M-3, IMO have a drone more like a fishing boat not a muscle car. You may already know this but some don't. I had a buddy in high school put a set of side pipes on his I-6 Mustang thinking it would sound like a Cobra...nope he got the large fishing boat sound.

Have you tried removing your exhaust behind the cat and seeing if you like the way it sounds? If you DO like the sound a high performance muffler added in place of the OEM will can tone it down and make it legal. If you don't like the sound it'll only cost you a flange gasket. In addition, you could also remove the rear resonator for a little more noise.

Lastly, I have a secondary cat delete on my '97. (Just a pipe between the first cat and the flange that attaches the second cat.) My butt dyno tells me at has a little more low end and a sound a little more like an I-6 BMW sedan out the back. Still quiet though. Good luck with your decision.

Is the next question going to be about burnouts? Because I think we need a question about doing burnouts in a Series 80.

You're going to want a CDL switch, and remove your front driveshaft, lol.

I had an I-6 Mustang that I was able to reproduce the sound of an E-type Jaguar with split headers, twin pipes and an H-pipe.

I can't imagine why you'd want loud pipes on a Series 80, unless you want to make SURE that everyone knew you were a complete, and not a partial douchebag.

You're right and E-type Jag, TR-6s and BMW's M-3s are I-6s that DO sound really good with pipes. I imagine it's the split header that helps take the drone out of an I-6 not to mention high compression and a quick revving motor. Sports car like early Ferrari's sound. There may be a Youtube video of an uncorked 80 yet I suspect it'll still sound boat like. But, I could be wrong.
