Sorry if this post shows my ignorance. I am looking for a Troopy. I love the 11 seat troop carriers. I think the models I am looking for are FJ45, HJ 45, FJ 47 (pre-1990). I doesn't have to be fully restored but in a respectable condition, with none to minimal rust. Specifically, It needs to be Left hand drive. I have looked at some that where right hand drive - but they won't work for my family. I have searched everywhere. Any help is appreciated! I am looking to join "the family."

LHD Troopies are a premium due the fact that they come from Saudi, Costa Rica, Canada and Europe.
The better 2H desiel started in 82 hj47 & will most likely be a Aussie RHD.
I'm sure someone else that has way more info will chime in.

I've been looking for the same thing for awhile. The best one I've run across is Ghetto Firemans. I am intending on looking at it this week when in I'm Cali but I'm concerned the H engine it has just may not work here in the mountains and although not fast it would work better where you live. His is one of the nicest you will find body wise. If you have the dough, Mikes is one of the nicest probably in country! I had shop that locally worked on it look over it and they gave it clean bill!!

I recently waited 4 months for a bj45 to arrive from Spain only to find it has significant rust in the bed and floor pans. I can set you up with Abe Russell if you wish to visit with him about it.

Let me know if I can help.

RHD to LHD conversions are possible if you have the available funds, so if you can find the right RHD for the right price it might be worth the consideration.

Jon,

I looked up his truck. If I am looking at the right one, it's beautiful. Love the red. But, I am looking for that hard top over the bed with the side facing bench seating. Thank you for your reply. -John

DieselFJ,

Thanks for helping. I am totally a "newbie". I thought about that and looked up some estimates - 20K? Does that sound right. I saw a really nice FJ45 overseas that about about $20K. The math didn't seem to add up after shipping. John

Guess I may be a little confused, his is a hard top and he has pretty much like new side facing seats in the back. Your looking for the troop carrier, not the pick up version. It is red though, however he also owns a 45 truck which is red.

Is this what you looked at? https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/1980-rare-lhd-european-troop-carrier.821766/

Jon,
Ok. That was NOT the one I saw. That car is "wicked cool!" Sounds like a great deal. Hope it works out for you. I read the posts and looks like he has multiple offers. If you don't buy it, YES, you can let him know that I am interested. My cell is 615-594-2821. Thanks again for the help.

If your looking for a special 40 model prices are dificult to "control", most of the time you are happy enough that you finally found one to your liking after years of searching.

Ghetto firemans is in good condition with a great color.

Imho for a very good price.

Not a speedy one but you can drive it for now and take care about that later.

Depending on what you want done while doing the conversion, but really the expense would be in the labor. For a straight up swap I would think 20K sounds steep, but again it depends whats is included. I looked for quite a while for the right Troopy, focusing on LHD, but I never found exactly what I wanted in LHD. The ones I found were either gassers, which I wanted diesel, or in terrible condition from South America. In the end I ended up with two HJ47 RHD's with 2H's. I have considered doing the Right to Left swap but decided not to after driving the RHD.

hi there

both were diesel BJ45 one was red and one white, the red one had done 80-90k miles they were not perfect but were solid trucks and i bet Abe will price them well.

Hey there,
A quick pic of the trucks Giles mentions above. Both just made an 1100 mile road trip without missing a beat. Red one was just decommissioned from a fire department in Portugal. It has 105k kilometers on it.
Best

I am importing restored LHD trucks from Colombia. We rarely get FJ45 troopies and when we do they are gas 2F motors and were used by the local government and very high miles. That combined with the rarity means that when we get a candidate it is best to do a frame off restoration. This leads to a $50,000 and up price.

I had a candidate a while ago to do a FJ45 troopy soft top high level restoration. Certainly if someone wants one like that I can do one.

I am curious how the Troopies drive in terms of steering circle etc? I am specializing in the FJ43s which are actually not that long compared to say a modern F150 pick up for instance. The FJ43s are 96 inch wheelbase and have driven a bunch of them. I really think the overall length is perfect. They have a better ride than the FJ40s but still easy to tool around town and park etc.

Would love to do a Colombian sourced Troopy I am sure at some point I will do one.

turning circle is not that bad but i guess it all depends on where you will use it but they are no worse than our Mercedes Sprinters at work and you see them in plenty of major towns. The bad thing about 45s, is rear passengers have a long way to go to get from the back to the seats (you may not care about passengers)

the best thing about 45s is you can use them for anything, camping , canoeing moving stuff etc and because they are longer they tow better. Oh yeh and you guys never had them in the States you its a pretty cool rare truck going up in value all the time.

I am pretty shocked Getto Fireman and Abe have not sold their trucks instantly

RHD Troopys are great to drive, I've owned 6 40, s and this is my favorite to drive....plus, you have great curb side parking every time. ...lol...here's mine...took me a very long time to find one in really good shape...If you find the one you want make sure funds are available because it won't last, you have to make the decision to buy now not later..
