Have you heard back from Al's yet?

Thanks for the reminder. I did hear back actually, but the response was "let me review this and I'll get back to you." I'm shooting off another email in a sec...

The more I've thought about it, the more I think that I have two things working against me: (1) the thin application I have from rolling, not spraying, two pretty thin coats, and (2) the amount of Vinyl Flattener I used, a full bottle per gallon ratio. This first round was really my "primer" if you will, and I've always meant to go back and do a final coat or two. My four coats of rolling will still end up being thinner than one heavy spray.

My next coat is going to be less that amount of VF I think, more like 3/4. I'll update with any responses from Al's...

So I did hear back from Al's, and they think that it could be a reaction between the toner and the amount of vinyl flattener in the mix, and suggest a 50% mix of VF rather than the whole quart per gallon...so that will be my next mix ratio.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you pick up your RAF blue tint and how much did you have to use per gallon of the liner? I'm guessing the more tint the darker the color would become, at least to some extent? Thanks!

I did my 60 with al's this week. I went with the old 55 style two tone. I really like how the grey laid down on the bottom half of the truck. The roof I want to shoot again and I really want to hit the white again. Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture i'll make a proper build thread on of these days.

^^^nicely done.

My tint was mixed for me by R&E Paint Supply. I sent them a color sample painted on a piece of sheet metal. Al's typical tint ratio is 8oz per gallon...I mixed 12oz along with the vinyl flattener.

Yeah, 16oz is a safe bet. Keep us posted on how that white holds up - how dirty it gets, if it stains, and if it yellows.

You got a pretty clean line between the white and the grey liners - is the grey over the top of the white, or vice-versa, and how much time elapsed between the different color coats?

the white and grey actually kiss just about perfectly. I figured I would get a little bleed thru so I did the top let it sit a few days then the white and the bottom the next night. The line to tape the white to the grey was tough seeing that the white well, it textured so It wasn't easy to get the clean tape line.

Yeah, I could see taping the textured liner being tricky. I don't think my typical blue painters tape would would, but maybe yellow masking would, or duct tape - what tape did you use? I ask because I'm considering a black/blue two-tone as I need to do another coat anyway. Thanks.

Definitely interested in how the white holds up. Would like to line where/when I pull my flares and the bottom of the doors.

plutonius, Looks great!

Thanx man. Only gonna get better - wait for the next round.

I actually used 3m blue painters tape the "edge lock" type. It's the best I have found for tricky applications and at 10$ a roll it better be! I'm considering using vasoline and a paint brush before the next coat of white.

I found my original stills so I will update this thread with re-linked photos and so on. I can't say enough good things about the Al's Liner - it's bomb proof stuff. A bit of Simple Green and a pressure hose and the mud falls right off. Here's how she sits now, Al's Black on Al's Vista Green, VF Flattened:

Looks good. If my paint ever gets too messed up I'm going to do this but in Toyota/desert tan, I've always loved that color on Toyota trucks.

Digging the green!

Did you spray or roll this time?
Have any up close shots of the texture?

Anyone know the color code for the green on the 78 troopys? Was going to go black but just saw a troopy in that dark green, almost olive and since my 96 was green to begin with I think it would give it that old school look.

Can't wait till the weather warms and I can line mine!

Thanks. Yeah, it has really grown on me. I rolled it - spraying is such a hassle and rolling it allows a lot more control. I mixed in small one-quart batches, and used a ratio of a half bottle of vinyl flattener per gallon (ie a semi-matte finish) - much better. I still need to go back thru this thread and relink the old photos, but here are some newbies:

I didn't wait for the mix to setup, and it went on too hot and crept under the tape line - I'll go back and redo this line, but from afar you don't notice it. It could use another black coat to hide the flare holes anyway:
