Wow this looks great!!! It really ties in nice with the black bumpers/sliders and wheels. I know you mentioned that you were all about the DIY but did you happen to price this out through a line-x dealer or body shop prior to getting started? If so, how did their price stack up against your actual cost?

I never priced out anyone else spraying - that would take the fun and self-torment out of it and we can't have that! :p All told, between the Al's costs, painting supplies (expendables), and the compressor rental I put about a grand into it.

Nice work, I'm digging the RAF Blue especially with the black wheels. What does the texture look like and how does rolling vs. spraying effect your control over texture?

It wold be nice to see a couple of closer shots if you get a chance.

Also are you putting the flares back on? Noticed the holes were still there.

Ross

I'll put up some CU's. I still a need a day of tweaking, touching up, etc. I have not decided on the flares yet - my original intent was to put them back on, but now that they are off, and I've driven it lightly, my knee jerk rx is to keep them off.

Good job! It looks very cool. Are you puttinng the flares back on?

:steer:

I think the flares are staying off. I think I'll mount one side and just have a look, but I've already had the displeasure of ripping off the right rear thanks to a rock, so karma is kind of dictating they stay off...

The texture is pretty light compared to what the gun gives you. In certain lighting angles you see a bit of an orange peel, in other angles it looks like 400 grit sand paper. From 20 feet away it looks like a matte paint. The vinyl flattener additive leaves a bit of a "sugar coating", and if the rest of the body cures like the roof did, the "crystals" will diminish a bit leaving more of a matte finish than a sparkly one. Still approaching full cure.

Man that looks nice.

I don't know much about Al's product, do they profess a high level of UV protection?

I've done my '40 with Durabak on the interior but it's kinda like the exterior because I run most of the summer with the top off. I'm not very pleased with the fade, but I've heard they added UV protection after I purchased mine.

Thanks and would be nice to run into you on some local stuff around so. cal. I'll certainly recognize you now! :D

Dan.

Al's does "profess" UV protection.

We'll see how it holds up. I like the texture that came from rolling it. I didn't use any of the flattener on mine and at night the streetlights make it look sparkly(sprayed). :meh: Whetever. I still love mine.

Plutonius- Your tailights are really shiny. are they new or did you have them restored?

:steer:

The texture looks really good. Excellent job, it's making think this is really the way I want to go with my rig when I finally decide something has to be done about the paint.

AWESOME! Even though I was going to do this anyway, you have just given me another reason to line my 80!

Right on guys. Nate, the tail lights are Depo - new to me about a year ago after some model citizen decided to deposit a shard of his dually's fender flare into my rear quarter panel via the tail light while parked on a skinny street in the hills. Hit & run. I'll have to find a picture, it was a pretty amazing scenario where had the angle been any different the damage would have been catastrophic. A witness said it looked like his truck deflected off my Kaymar rear bumper.

Ditto on the UV damage claims, only time will tell, but Al's does make some big claims about it. But once you apply this stuff once and get it down, it's pretty straight forward. I mean at this point I could redo my hood for example in 30 minutes. Masking and disassembling everything is what takes time, but everything from here on out is 1 banana.

I don't want to add a zillion coats and end up with a couple hundred pounds of liner, but you get the idea. I'm over the show room look on my stuff. My boys treat the 80 like a jungle jim anyway, especially when the RTT is on. Now, I can dare them to try & scuff it up

Thanks Dan. We're up in Jawbone a fair amount...more lately as my 8 year old is moto-obsessed now.

it looks nice, good job!

That looks great! Where in Socal are you? I've been back and forth on doing this and would like to see it in person. Great color choice btw

So I ended up putting the flares back on for now as I prefer the lines of a flared 80. I still need to paint the door handles and mirrors...I need to pull the handles out and do it properly...

My initial impressions of driving a fully lined rig for a couple of weeks are that the road noise is significantly reduced. Alot of the the little rattles are gone and I no longer have to crank up the stereo on the freeway so the kids can hear the dvd. It looks the same dirty or clean. And I've been trying to pinstripe it with some dried out manzanita bushes and...nothing. Again, it's not perfect, but I'm really pleased with the finish.

Some fun new center caps too (decals found on ebay, caps hit with the Duplicolor trifecta):

Bringing this back from the depths....looks like lots of good work.

Your first few photos show a white sample, is that available directly or was it some mix that Als did and sent you or what? I can only find tan, gray, and black (of course any are tintable) but having white from the start would seal the deal for me.

It just looks white in the photos, but it's actually a light grey - those samples were sent by Al's directly, so it's a "stock" color. I think that they can do white, but the pure white pigment is prohibitively expensive...worth a call or email to Al's or R&E Paint.

Thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, time to put this on the to do list for the roof rack removal...and figure some stuff out this summer on it.

This is a great thread. What a job on the center caps and liner!!! Al's should pay you for advertising their stuff.

Do you think that they can do the OEM maroon color?

Nice center caps. Sorry but I might have to do that to mine. Since it's raining out and I don't want to go measure, what size decal did you go with?

Technically you can tint it any color you like. I played around with the OEM Nightshadow Pearl but wasn't liking how the metallics were settling in with the liner components and bailed out.

The decals are 3.5".

A couple more pics. I STILL need to paint my mirrors & handles. One of these days...

320lbs of pool salt in the back (on OME 850+10mm, 860 rear):
