I am seeing much higher costs for rebuilt units (900-1500) on fleabay. Very interested in a new $600 unit...tell me where.

Anyone want to guess what I did today?

Decided to change out the side cover gasket and grommets. It's just one of thoes gaskets I would have absolutely kicked my self for not changing if it split. After starting on it I was happy I decided to do it.

Clean like new inside. Supper impressed with how clean the inside of this engine is.

Yep glad I'm changing this.....

I also installed a Toyota low oil pressure switch in place of the factory Dodge sensor. I am wiring this to a low oil pressure light and buzzer.

Not supper pumped about the blue felpro gasket but it will work. It's good quality but the blue is throwing me off lol.

Taking off the injection pump was a bit daunting. I found that the pump timing had slipped at some point. When the engine was keyed at TDC the tab in the pump was barely visible in the little side window. I would guess it's about 3mm off where it needs to be apparently it's 1.5deg per mm. So it was about 9.5deg. I will re time it when I re assemble. Hope to set the timing at 15-16deg up from the spec 13.5deg. Dont want to loose cold weather starting but would like to gain some MPG's.

I did not want to get this far into this engine but it needed to be done and I'll feel better knowing it's done.

Oh also took off the intake manifold cover and re sealed it as well. Glad I did it was leaking in a spot.

I like your idea for a low oil light/buzzer.
Honestly anyone running this engine should have one. I have seen more than a few pump there oil into the coolant and seize weather it was a head gasket that failed or a oil cooler.

I have blown two toyota diesels very quickly by loss of oil, first one lost a drain plug, second one the axle peirced the bottom of the oil filter...I don't want to go through that ever again.

Have you determinds what you will use for the warning indicator? Any reason you replaced the dodge sensor with a toyota one?

I have, I plan to use a simple LED with a built in buzzer. I was actually going to wire it up to a kill switch that would kill the engine. Issue with that is if it killed it in the middle of a left turn or something. I used the Toyota sensor becouse it's a simple grounded switch. The Dodge one was two wire and I did not want to try and sort it out.

Do you have the part number for the sensor you used? seems like a fairly simple, yet invaluable addition. I like the way you think.

Why not run it to the factory low oil gauge on the instrument cluster?

I want something I can't miss, I will also have the factory oil pressure guage hooked up. It's not so much for me but others that may drive it.

Good call on the gasket, that thing would have haunted you at the WORST time possible knowing your past luck.

That was my thought too. I want to deal with all the gaskets and seals that are not easy or possibly Ly to change in the truck. Only one I'm not changing is the headgasket as it's doable in the truck and I really do not want to go any further into this thing.

I think you've gone about as far as needed, personally I probably would have missed that and paid for it later!

So bit of an update. May have got screwed over on the turbo. No word from the seller and it was stupidly a e-transfer. Still got a bit of hope but it's dwindling. On the bright side I found his Facebook and other social networks so if I can't get my money back I can get $350 worth of entertainment out of him.

Looks like I just got a he351cw, going to take a bit of work to get it in but I'm starting from scratch with down pipe and intercooler anyways. Only concern is down pipe clearance to firewall.
2 possible options: from CPPDiesel.com p/n 351WFL. HE351 flange to 4" pipe. Fab up your own. Or from DAP-dieselautopower.com p/n 907002. Downpipe for HE351 in a 1st gen dodge. Has tighter bend than 2nd Gen and eliminates cast elbow. I'm assuming that it's a 4" pipe, doesn't say tho.

Thanks, at this stage if I got screwed on the HE351 I bought I will just get a HX35.

Do you have an HX35? If not, I have my HX35 that was rebuilt by mumau diesel along with my motor. I maybe getting a custom turbo from engineered diesel.
