Hmmm, that harness does look really good. This is a good opportunity to rewrap the harness with the firesleeve.

Can you describe the issue for us again? At what RPMs, inputs, etc. As you know, I had my 1994's VAF refurbished. Ran it for about 1000 miles before I started to get some idle RPM fluctuations. It happened a few times, no CEL so I swapped my known good VAF into it and ran it for a month without a single miss. My comms back and forth with BavRest are reassuring. They are providing me with troubleshooting assistance and I feel we are close to resolution. One thing of note, is the door spring tension between the two VAFs are different. In the known good VAF, the spring offers more resistance than the refurbed one. BavRest wants to tighten it up for me but only after I run the refurbed VAF for a little longer.

All that to say, I wonder if your issue would be solved with a new VAF. Anyone close by to help you out with that? If not, I'll see about the timeline to get my VAFs swapped and fixed etc and maybe I can send you mine for TS purposes.

WTF is this?

I think this came from Toyota…it’s below the EGR pipe and was under that original looking gray tape. Digging around in here makes me extra nervous.

I’m starting to lean towards another solution…

That aint f***ing Toyota. Isn't that blue painters tape?
It’s really wide electrical tape…I think…it’s old.

It’s a splice. I’m fairly certain it’s original. One white wire with a black trace comes in..and two come out.

Well I can’t find the splice in the EWD, which is disappointing. I’m pretty sure I have it nailed, but I can’t I’d what those wires are. It just started raining so I’m going to call it for today.

Cruiser is now a glacier again.

Ok, I ordered a Chinese VAFM to try out. The only one on eBay is used (obviously)and is $330 shipped and all the hardware in the photo of the engine bay is pretty rusty….so **** that. I’ll give this a try. Returns on Amazon’s are pretty easy.

Just looking for wiring damage is often fruitless. There can be breaks in the copper with no visible damage to insulation.

The only way to verify a good wire is end to end continuity testing.

I don’t disagree. I was hoping to get lucky and see something obvious. I am not ruling out an internal break in that wire harness. I still think it could be one of my injector connectors making poor contact, but I’ll going to rule out some other things next.

I’ll wrap up the harness tomorrow (easy to say-harder to do) and start testing my components with my new DMM. I now have a set of 10’ retractable test leads so I actually can chase down continuity of the ECM wires.

You ordered a Chinese VAFM via Amazon or eBay? I would recommend against a Chinese VAFM anyway. Terrible reviews on mud.

If anything you can buy a refurbed one from that eBay dude.

I ordered via Amazon. So much easier to return, I thought it couldn't hurt to throw this part at it and see how it does. If it dosn't make a difference then I'll probably keep it as a spare so I can get my original Toyota one rebuilt if it bites the dust in the future. Its unclear to me if they are all remanufactured toyota parts or a whole separate casting. I'll report here first.

I tried this one. It had 2 reviews. $119 shipped prime, plus free returns. Cheaper than a pair of shoes.
Amazon product ASIN B09F3B3TBK
I'm a strong believer in the "if its too good to be true..." type of philosophy, but free returns and here in 48hours is hard to argue with. I'll feel amazing if I have the ****ing harness all buttoned up by then!

I’d much rather buy from that ****ing eBay dude but his s*** is pricey and I don’t trust his work. Better than China though

Yes, and there isn't much love for the 93-94 VAFM as I know you're painfully aware. Its slim pickings out there. If I had endless time to wait on a known good used one I'd go that route from one of the part out peeps here on 'mud, but Steve told me to "Just drive it" and I listen to that dude.:flipoff2:

Seriously I have low expectations. Lets see when it get here on Thursday then we can all lament together why these stupid critical parts are impossible to get.

Wish I lived closer, I’d loan you my extra VAFM. Did the Chinese unit come with a sack of fortune cookies at least?

Mail it! If my s*** wasn’t in troubleshooting mode right now, I’d send him mine
