You need to cast that Irwin in the trash and head over to the vise thread for some ideas on a replacement.

TOM!! Why did you have to post this? I had NO idea. Now I’m on the hunt for an old American or Japanese made vice. A whole new world has just been introduced to me. I’m glad and mad. Thanks for posting but also :flipoff2:

If you are in then you may as well go all in.

Garage journal is another great resource

I have the smaller version of this vise, but I'm not sure it's USA made...but its been abused a ton and still is kicking....its just in a difficult place to retrieve at the moment.

Well, I'd say there is a support group for folks like us...but we're all already here.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MEEEEEEEE!!!! Btw, my wife wants a word with you. I had to tell her I have a problem and you and the other lot are enablers.

@PNWTreeOctopus , this thing running yet? Don't forget the bet.

They are dismantling the production area for 747. There are Wilton's everywhere. I've been trying this figure out how to get one in my bag. Lol

I didn't know I wanted a vise so badly until this thread.

Somehow This isn't what I was expecting with my ih8mud thread...Oh well.

Now you can be a part time vise broker as a side hustle. Figure out your rates and post em up!:flipoff2:

Nope. Not yet. I have to out in my social worker hat today and help solve some problems for my Dad's journey through Alzheimer's, but It should only take about 3 weeks to install the radiator....ok well maybe it should only take a few hours to finish up the undone things in the engine compartment, im pretty close. Spark plug wires and new Toyota coil are are their way...slowly, and Its almost time to go get some more coolant to filler up (gonna go green...it already has green. It has run well on green, green is available all over the place). Feel free to talk me out of it, but the effort of flushing out all the last drops of green and the added cost of red seems to be a needless expense and effort for the potential gain in cooling/ longevity.

Also I sent a photo off to Irwin and they are sending me a new vise. Ill see how quickly it fails. Maybe it will survive the rest of the u-joint process.
Here's what they had to say:

This is a good thing, because I can have a working vise while I try and scrounge up a nice old one to replace it. But no doubt I'll sell the thing once I find a suitable replacement.

Honestly if I could just walk out the door with them I would. And pass them out for free. There are so many metal tools just getting pushed into the corner.

The 747 was the last plane completely built in house. So a lot of the work done on them isn't done anymore.

That's the end of an era for sure. I occasionally see machinists chests that pop up on CL that have a history at Boeing. Hopefully you can get some of that surplus and make it useful again in your own endeavors!

I'm hoping they sell it off in the plant. I could use a press break and band saw and a bench or two

Boeing used to have a surplus store in Kent that was open to the public. It was always interesting going through the store, never knew what you might find. I see a lot of Boeing stuff on Cyberauctions now so if the stuff from the 747 line gets surplussed it may end up there.
