I have the EL wire on hand now, but this seems to be a much better solution. Just ordered for my rebuild. Thanks for an awesome write up.

Pull the cluster and stop on over... I have plenty of LED strip left over...
 
This was super helpful. Thank you! I basically followed your instructions to the letter. I ended up having a bad board on the back of the instrument cluster...luckily I bought an aftermarket cluster on some auction for $5. Stole the board from that...now I have light. I would post a pic but it's just like yours, except it's km/h.

This took start to finish 2.5 hours. Would have been less if my board wasn't bad and if I was good at soldering. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THIS...SUPER SIMPLE.
