I am another East Coaster that is planning on making the trek to LCDC this year and cant wait.
The information on the comms says “Suitable Trail Communications (2m Ham Radio, CB, or 2-Way Radio)
Is there a preferred or dominate radio to get to communicate with the groups? I am debating getting one of the radios hardwired.
This little handheld HAM unit (see link below) will allow you to hear far more clearly/reliably. CB is nearly dead as a solution, and those relying on it are notoriously frustrated.
To be sure you’re hearing everyone in all groups, a combination of HAM and a family radio unit like Motorola, etc. will mean you have a good radio experience.
I have two of these:
BaoFeng BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio (136-174Mhz VHF & 400-520Mhz UHF) Includes Full Kit

While the lithium battery easily lasts all day...I would recommend adding a AA battery option since the charge cradles are awkward to use on the trail should you hit a low battery, or forget to fully charge at night:
BTECH, BaoFeng BL-5 AA Battery Pack for for BF-F8HP, UV-5X3, and UV-5R Radios

Another nice backup is this 12V no-battery option:
BTECH, BaoFeng BL-5 Battery Eliminator for for BF-F8HP, UV-5X3, and UV-5R Radios

Even if you grab all three, it’s less than $100.
This is a common choose, too, meaning one of us will be able to easily help you set it up if there is confusion.
