Front axle, showing the truss my brother made...yes I have white knuckles :grinpimp:
'White Knuckles' - That'd make a good name for a rig!

let's be honest here. we measured the tires and they really are only 34.5" tall. so not quite a 37 as advertised.

Well I have death wobble. :frown: Took it out on the road for the first time today, started going thinking to myself "well this rides pretty well...hmm the steering wheel isnt quite straight" BAM hit a bump "oooooooohhhh......." turned around and went home. It was only at about 25mph..thankfully not faster or I might not be writing this right now. I'm going to go eat dinner and then do some research on how to cure it. I plan to do hydro assist at some point...perhaps it'll be sooner *shrug*

I get it between 30 and 35, no other time. Really wierd, but I'm not running a steering stabilizer:meh:

At least you're driving it!!

Drove it...

I'm thinking it could have something to do with not having sway bars or shocks or the fact that i'm running 37in bias ply tires. Besides that I have no clue, u-bolts are all torqued to 100ftlbs, the knuckles are in great shape, it has a high steer kit, blah blah, pretty much all the normal culprits for DW are taken care of.

Got rid of the death wobble. Still a little shimmy in the wheel over bumps and it pulls pretty hard to the right. But its not always a constant pull to the right, sometimes its ok, sometimes it really pulls. I took off the bias ply 37s and put the 31s back on and its a little better, but still pulls. My brother and I are thinking the preload on the trunion bearings isnt high enough. Both of them are at the lower end of the allowable preload, so we're thinking since it has 37s it should be on the higher side.

Thoughts from the SOA gurus?

Do an alignment first then see if it still pulls to the right. When you did your C&T were the angles exactly the same side to side or were they within a degree? I've read that if they're off by a smidgen, it can pull to one side or another.

The toe in is right about 1/8 of an inch, so the alignment should be good. The cut and turn was within less than 1 degree of eachother. I just went out and checked to top of the steering arms where they bolt to the knuckle is within .5 degree of eachother. If it makes a difference the right side is the one with the lower reading. The steering also feels a little rough to me atleast. It's hard to explain but when turning the wheel there are times where its very easy and then sometimes you can feel a little clunk in the wheel and it gets slightly more difficult and then it gets easy again.

How much play do you have in your steering wheel? Have you tightened the steering box? PS pump leaking?

There's a little play, I dont think its excessive. The pump leaks a lot. But before the SOA the steering was great.

Yesterday I adjusted the shims so the preload is around 13lbs give or take a little. It helped out a good bit. Still pulls a little to the right and still has some shimmy in the wheel over bumps. I'm going to make extended sway bar ends and temporarily make it so I can use the stock shocks to see if that helps out. (someone needs to buy my 31in tires so I can buy some shocks!!)

yup should be the other way around :frown:

super sick truck also make sure the tire are not over inflated

Thanks! I have the tires inflated to about 16psi. I'm going to try to get the sway bars installed tomorrow and maybe also make some sort of steering stabilizer to see if that'll help, at this point I'm at a loss :meh:

So I had fixed my shimmy/death wobble but it still pulled to the right. I fixed the pulling to the right and now the death wobble/shimmy is worse. I'm picking up a parts cruiser hopefully Monday (read: going to be parting it out...check the classifieds in a couple days..) so I'm half tempted to return this cruiser back to stock, sell off the SOA parts and be done messing around with it, maybe get an OME down the road. I'm starting school in the fall and need a reliable vehicle to get me there and I need the money to buy a winter beater since this cruiser is almost spotless it'll never see a Vermont winter.

Anyway just a little angry that I havent driven my cruiser in like a month.

I wouldn't give up on your SOA so quickly. Re-read some posts and had some thoughts:

Do you have shocks mounted up front yet? Make sure they are stiff since the 2f is heavy and crusier spings are soft.
Sounds like the steering pump is going out so that's probably your assist issue. It's pushing bigger meats now.
Hydroassist is the best steering dampener, if not try some kind of dampener. They did come that way from the factory.
Check the balance of those tires.
16psi sounds to low IMO.

Just keep at it and you'll find it. Once you hit the trails you'll know why you put the work in a SO conversion.

No shocks up front yet, ran out of money and nobody wants to buy my tires. I wouldnt think that would cause the shimmy/death wobble, but I've been wrong before. I'm planning to get some Bilstein 5125s as soon as the tires sell.

Steering pump does puke a lot of fluid, and theres some play in the steering box shaft where the pitman arm mounts. I'm going to rebuild and tap the box off the parts cruiser and then save up for hydroassist, but it probably wont happen until spring. I do have a steering stabilizer on there right now, it helped a little but not much.

Where should I bring 37s to be balanced? My friend has a shop but he doesnt think they'll fit on his balancer. The wheels appear to be balanced...they have those aluminium adhesive weights on them. Should I just get some airsoft pellets or whatever?

They're a bias ply tire, apparently most people run them at 16psi on the street, or so my brother says.

It's rather frustrating when you're spending money 10 times faster than you're making it...and I still have a lot more to buy.

I'm right there with you about the money situation. I'm still broke and my SOA got to the drivable stage a month ago.

Get some shocks on up front and then re-evaluate. Not having shocks made a HUGE difference for me, and I've only got chepo shocks up front, nada out back.

The 5125's won't be stiff enough for the front, from what I've read. I'm thinking about getting some 7100's for the front and 5125's for the rear, when I can afford to.

I've gotta concentrate on passing inspection right now.

I'd be inclined to take them in and have them checked for balance still, it may have not been done right. Maybe they've slipped on the rim when wheeling (don't know where you got them and what their usage was). As for a place look for a semi truck tire shop or a 4x4 place. The place I'll be going to is called industrial tire and charges $12 a tire for balance, costs more because they are bigger tires.
