landcruiser canister air filter in a 4runner?

Hello Folks

I'm wondering if anyone has swapped their stock air clearner assembly for a landcruiser canister type air cleaner assembly.
I've always liked them better than the square element and cone high-flow filters don't really work all that well preventing crap from getting into the engine.
I'd want to do this to my 22re somehow and I can get 62 air cleaners pretty easily. I don't know the differences inbetween a 62 and 80 air cleaner, both 3fe ones anyway.

i'm slowly adding landcruiser parts to the 4runner to make it a "LandRunner", to my mind anyway.

Having owned a '62 at one time, that thing is HUGE. I have no idea how you'd fit that under the hood.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm prob suffering from delusions of available space because the head if off and I'm more used to working on my 40.

I have an 80 and a 4Runner with a 22RE. I'm not saying it can't be done but it's not obvious how you could make it fit.

sounds like a project i'll put on the backburner then. Modify for the 40 if 4runner application turns out not working.

If I remember correctly, the toyota diesel hilux's came with a canister style air cleaner.

I'll have to look around for one and see if i can stuff it inside the engine compartment with the 22re. I'd thought that most of the non-usa trucks got the canister type.
Now i'm thinking that it will be easier to just add a prefilter and maybe stuff an intake tube inside the fender

I wanted one for a while but also had issues with room.

The prefilter is pretty easy and works great. I bought a sheet of Uni filter media for 10$ and trimmed it to fit my stock filter housing. It works wonders, I can try to get a pic after work.

Ditto, or else it's always goto the lady's drawer and steal one of her pantyhose(es-SP?). My 3VZE filter after 1 trip in and out of Mexico.

I have been running this setup for almost four years, I used to go through a lot of V6 filters.

I cut a hole in the filter housing and cut up a cheap wire shelf to hold the filter from inside the housing.
