So is it an upgrade to mod an FJ62 3FE stock air cleaner onto an FJ62 2F?

Mark

I have a non-USA diesel canister filter that is similar to the 62's. I used it on my 2F prior to the my diesel swap. One of the best mods I did. I sold the carb adapter a while back. but heard that Spector has them again.

Now with the diesel.

Looked at sor.com and could not find an adapter...

WHY was it a good upgrade for your 2F?

Two main things IMHO, and few minor ones too!

The carb is not covered with a giant heat trap, so less heat sink issues.

It worked great to connect my Snorkel to. The canister and snorkel draw much cleaner air, so I seldom have to change the filter.

The larger filter flows more air.

It makes very easy for carb tuning for altitude.

Very easy to adjust valves.

To me, all these were advantages.

Can you show me a pic of the adapter? (if you have one)... or maybe point me at one at sor.com? Is it just the large arm or is there some adapter right on top of the carb?

You used the diesel cleaner... do you know anything about using the 3FE cleaner?

The adapter can be seen in my first post pictures. It connects the the flex hose to the carb. and has mounts to the valve cover It's painted black and made if steel. I know SpikeStrip bought one from SOR a few months ago. Maybe Call SOR and ask them for a Non-USA Canister Air Filter Assy. with Carb Adaptor.

Other than the hose end of the filter canister top, the 3FE filter assembly appears to be the same as the diesel filter assembly. I have a 3FE assembly that I am considering using in my engine swap (5.7L TPI). The 3FE top piece has the necessary shape to bolt the air meter to, while the diesel top just has a tube.

Man, Doug, that sure is a clean diesel set up --

Anyway, SOR part # 012-12A-U for carb adapter. 50 bones in stock.

@Doug720: What are those blue hose pieces called (adapting between your intake pieces)?

It's probably obvious, but for the life of me cannot find those. I'm trying to do exactly as the OP, just with a different engine.

Sorry OP if this is a bit too sidetracked--

x2 It was much more practical to go this route for my safari snorkel then to run a hose across the engine bay or modify the existing air cleaner.

Plus who doesn't love non-USA goodies.... :D

Commonly called a "bulge hose" or a "hump hose". Pur-O-Sil used to be the best brand name in that business, but now there are a lot of Chinese knock-offs. Some good, some barely OK.
Samco is another good name, or has been in the past. Haven't had need for any of their stuff in a while.

That set up works good for desmogged vehicles, or partially desmogged then, since you would have no place for the big hose off the air pump and the three vacuum lines that connect to original intake ofthe original 2f or 3fe. All can be overcome I guess, but just something to keep in mind.

My BJ and my FJ62 both use the same K&N filter, so yes they are the same size.

One more advantage is a larger surface area of the filter. A second possible advantage, this needs to be checked, is the use of a washable OEM filter. This would be the case if the same filter used in the 80 series can be used in these housings. Part # for the OEM is 17801-61030 and here's a thread discussing the OEM 80 series filter vs. K&N https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/156529-80-series-k-n-vs-oem-air-filter.html. These 3FE, H, canisters appear to be the same size as the 80 series so there is a good chance the washable OEM filter can be used.

Well that was really the original question... is there a real world advantage to the larger and relocated air cleaner? I do like the idea of not having the housing over the top of the valve cover although you would still need to pull it off to get to the valves... the larger surface area is a theoretical advantage but in the real world I don't THINK it would make much difference.

I will have to check to see if I can spare the space over on the (pass) side of the engine bay. I currently have my winch solenoid and ARB pump over there. Plus I plan on adding a York for OBA. I need to see if I can rejigger this stuff to all fit. AND I don't want to block the oil dipstick or, really, the plug wires...
I'm going to try to find an air cleaner housing for cheap so I can test fit stuff...

I got curious and looked it up. The OE p/n for the FJ62 air filter element according to ToyoDIY.com is 17801‑68020 (I bold-ed the 80 series p/n above). So they're not the same p/n unfortunately.
According to a post in the link above the dimensions for the washable 80 series filter are:

  • Diameter (OD): 8 1/2"
  • ID: 4 1/4"
  • Height: 5 11/16"
Has anyone got a FJ62 filter handy that they can measure?

Coming up with the same measurements for an FJ62 filter. It's a Wix (not OEM), should that make any difference.

Thanks for the answer above--

Just dug out my FJ62 filter assembly here at home and measured it too. Same set of dimensions for a mfg unknown filter element. I'm thinking the 80 series element might be the hot set-up for a 62 filter assembly.

Is it for sale?
