I have a 1996 Prado JDM- 3.0L 1KZTE. The ECU recently conked out (89661-60250) and it's proving hard to track down a spare. I have read in some forums that it is possible to convert the electronic fuel pump to manual on this truck. I know that it would be an involved job, and admittedly above my expertise, but without getting a spare ECU- I can't seem to see another option. Anyone able to help or have any ideas? Are their aftermarket ECUs that would work with this truck??

Another member recently posted pictures of leaking capacitors in his ECU. Could be yours has the same problem and could be repaired. Have you removed and opened it? I would think it's cheaper and easier to replace or repair the ECU then it would be to source and install a mechanical injection pump. I've worked on both electronic and mechanic VE pumps, and personally I like the electronic one a lot better. But if you insist, there is a how-to thread I've seen in the forums here on how to switch to the mechanical pump. Search and you'll probably find it. If your capacitors are leaking in your ECU, I could help you repair it....(I design and work on electronics for a living).

My ECU did have leaky capacitors and I have sent it out to be repaired (hopefully), but I am looking for a fix should they come back and tell me that it can't be repaired. I would love to get a second ECU to have as a back up, as I agree that the electronic pumps are better but unfortunately the model ECU for my LC seems to be pretty hard to find. Denso does not make them anymore, and the used market is very slim. I've also heard that aftermarket engine management systems may be a possibility but don't know of anywhere in Canada that would be able to work on my JDM diesel.

Appreciate the offer for help on the ECU. If it comes back still broken I may enlist your services! :)

Sounds good. I'd say there is a very good chance it'll be fine after the repair. I can take a look if it still doesn't work. Have you contacted these guys about a spare ECU? I bought parts from them before, and they are great: Mustang Connection - 1965 - 1973 Mustang Specialists and Foreign Car Importer Otherwise you could look to the UK or NZ for a bigger market?

Here's a couple threads about the mechanical pump option in case you could not find them:

1kz-te to mechanical pump

1KZ-T.. No longer TE (Mitsu 4m40 pump swap)
