So I have a snow day!! But I got bored so I decided to install a set of component Dome Tweeters I got a month ago. I stuck with Infinity since I have had excellent results with the door speakers. https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/krikey-stevesnj-build-thread.724383/page-5#post-9404610 Unfortunately the tweeter in the front door speakers is partially obscured and was blocking the highs.

So i got a set of Infinity REF-075TX 3/4 Inch Textile Dome Tweeters

So the next thing to do is determine where to install them. I didn't want them install them in the door card and I tried to put them in the triangular cover for the side mirror bolts but mounting them would of been tough and the angle would be hard to achieve. So I looked for another spot and decided on the headliner where the roof and A pillar meet near the visor screw mount and above the A pillar garnish. I used the speaker wire that was connected to the knee mounted speakers on the bottom of the dask. They are awful and I disconnected them for good. These little speakers brought my new system to another level of greater sound. I suggest installing them with the stock system as well. They have changed my listening experience! Anywho Here's the install pics. They are tiny but pack a punch!

Location and hole. I put it in the divot in the A pillar to not squash anything. I used the mounting bezel as a templet and used a utility knife.

I really like that tweeter idea. I have been wondering what I should do for more sound up front. I disconnected my terrible dash speakers, and replaced the rear door speakers and added speakers up front, but I never have very much audio coming from in front of me.

Did you do them on both sides? I'm assuming the a pillar has the same divot on the passenger side.

Yep same divit. You will be surprised what it sounds like.

Small update. I went down to auto shop and used their hot tank and sand blaster to make the valve cover pretty again. Intake gets the same treatment tomorrow. Waiting for head bolts and still lookin for a machine shop to have the head looked at.

Added some simple color and protection to the valve cover.

So desperate times come with desperate measures. I couldn't afford to have my head milled so I went on the interweb and found a homemade way to flatten the head...sandpaper. Yeh I was skeptical but it really came out fantastic. But a lot of time. In the end I cannot fit a .005 feeler under the straight edge.

Started with a full size sanding block made from shelving from home depot. Very flat and no deflection.

I started with 80 grit

After I got the bulk of the low spots out I used more of the shelving with sandpaper attached with Permatex spray adhesive for getting a more precise cut. I'd have the weight of the head itself and push and pull remove and clean off sandpaper and clean head and continue.
The process was 80grit, 120grit, and ended up with 220grit.

The end result with excellent results

Looks like it came from the machine shop to me :p

Ha, that's awesome. I do that with all the two stroke stuff I build, but never occurred to me to try it on a multi cylinder anything. Love it!

I'm in South Phila Steve, but you know that, no?

Thanks, yeh it was a risk but it came out great. Yeh you were in North Jersey right?

So I just ended up sending the head out to a machine shop. He just took off as little as possible...looks purdy!

Still waiting for valve shims :)

All cleaned up!

IMG_1086.JPG

Sandblasted the intake and I cleaned the injectors myself and installed them...

Even cleaned the inside of the intake

So I made a lot of progress. Slow but still progress. Since my last post I did the following;

Installed corrected valve shims (no pic)

Wrapped the EGR pipe in header wrap and used two clamps and epoxied the screw gear so they wont loosen over time

Cleaned and painted the brackets in Appliance Epoxy black (before and after)

IMG_1103.JPG

Installed all new vacuum tubing

IMG_1104.JPG

Cleaned the wiring harness and wrapped the exposed wires near the EGR pipe in header wrap with foil tape. I used Fast 505 cleaner from Home Depot with a tire brush to get onto the crevices, came out better than I expected!

Cleaned wire loom

Good job Steve. What made you decide to get the head shaved vs. Your sand paper method?

The exhaust valve seats needed to be ground and when I took it to a recommended machine shop the guy said he'll take a little off the head since it was good to mill it down. So for milling, valve job, cleaning he just charged me $300. I couldn't pass that up and it was done correctly.

FINALLY have the head on, now cams and sttach wires and then fluids and then start....hopfully. lol

So i got it running last night around 10pm, distributor was off a tooth but found and adjusted. Some louder valvetrain noise than usual up front. Hope I don't have to re-shim...blah. But it's nice to have a nice fresh and 99.99% leak free engine.

Well i took the truck to work today and it ran well. I have been driving it and it runs a lot smoother than ever! May be taking it to the mountains of PA tomorrow if all works out. Thanks all for your input and nice words.

So i lost the rubber isolator thing for the throttle cable and I needed a new TPS harness and i went to a U Pull It salvage yard. I found the harness off a camry and the U shaped isolator. Then I walked up further and found this LX green with oak interior. So I dug in and the motor and major stuff was gone, trans front seats. But while looking inside I looked upward and found a fully operational driver side visor. I also found some door handle trim, front window triangle plastics and rear plastics stuff. Total $19.50 MAJOR score!! The visor was $10...just needs some cleaning. WooHoo!!
