UPDATE : At the suggestion of @LS1FJ40 I carefully cut a small piece of tint that he sent me and fit it over the face of the KOSO gauge. It really cuts the light down during nighttime driving. Like I told him I used to have to keep my hand at a certain spot on the wheel to try and block it out. It was especially irritating on a particular stretch of highway that I drive in the early morning. Not its a non-issue. Daytime its still perfectly visible.

Glad you finally got around to doing it! That piece of tint was donated courtesy of Lowe's Home Improvement. (Had a box of tint that was getting thrown away so I snagged a big piece)

Hi Guys, I haven't read the last few pages of the thread, but it looks like you can now get red numbers in addition to blue. Here's my question: I'm using the 40mm glowshift hose adapter.

Koso website says

Sensor type Temperature sensor :
BF030125 1/8(BSP) x 28
**Sensor supplied with meter is BSPP (straight), if you need BSPT (taper) you have to order sensor # BF030125
Super Slim Style Thermometer - Koso North America

The glowshift gizmo is 1/8 NPT, correct? Then what's this business about BSPP versus BSPT?

:edit: Nevermind, called KOSO and they said it will fit in an 1/8"NPT hole and they don't know why the website has that blurb :o

Hey Heckraiser, I saw that note on their website and so I spent the a good 30 minutes looking at BSP to NPT adapters. Did you end up getting one and can you confirm that they are in fact 1/8" NPT probes?

The location pictured on the first page of this thread is the best location for your temperature sensor. The hottest water is coming out there, not from the lower port near the thermostat.
hottest part off engine is the highest part of head in case you get air in system it will show immediately

Still sitting on the kitchen table, but i'll check back in once I work on it :)

Second this. The reason I haven't purchased the Koso unit is because the website says BSPT (tapered) and BSPP (straight). I don't want to use either. I just want to use 1/8" NPT, which is different than both types of British Standard.

The difference between NPT, BSPP and BSPT seals

Why not use bspt?

I just prefer NPT because it’s more common. All of my weld bungs and taps are 1/8” NPT.

I suppose its not that big a deal to buy a BSP tap though.

FWIW, I didn’t even read the instructions and went forward tapping the hole with NPT. It was a tad loose so I hooped her up with grey RTV. That was two years ago and a lot of time above 200 degrees. Onece it’s in, it stays in anyway.

Finally installed mine.. I think it's been sitting in the garage with the rest of the tune up parts I accumulated since 2012................ Hopefully mounted lower in the dash it won't be so obnoxiously bright at night...

Now I have one more thing to stress over all the time..

On that note - What should the normal temp range be..?

With an OEM thermostat, 187*F is nominal. The AC will cut out at 225* (IIRC). So somewhere in between those, depending on ambient temperature, your cooling system's efficiency, and what the engine is being asked to do.

Did you weld a 1/8” bung on the water pipe??? Nice! Looks really clean!

Yes, let's just say that last time I tried to drill/tap something it came out less than ideal.. A $5 fitting and a $20 weld job later and my OCD is quite satisfied...

Down side is you have to pull a bunch of crap apart to get that pipe out... That's why the parts been sitting in my garage for 6 years until I finally got around to it...:bang:

I intended to do the same thing. I bought a brand new water pipe from Mr. T and some really nice Meziere weld bungs. Then my fabricator mucked them all up! The welds looked terrible. He said I could bring it back if it leaked. Ha!

Did you TIG weld it yourself? Your welds look really nice!

I wish....!

No i found a little shop in my area, the owner used to do welding for aerospace.. Hes done a great job on a couple things I've taken to him.

Confirmed the probe fits in a npt hole

Interesting. So Koso supplies the Slim Water Gauge with a 1/8" NPT sensor, but their website is wrong (website says BSP, but it’s actually NPT)? Or you made a 1/8" BSP sensor (Koso) work in a 1/8" NPT hole (GlowShift)?

I believe it is actually a NPT probe, not BSPT, and their website just mis-labeled it. That is what they told me on the phone, and appears to be the case by matching the parts up.
