Okay so my "new pig" has scary steering. The driver's side knuckle has a lot of slop, found out why today. The lower trunion bearing resembles a bit of shrapnel rather than a bearing. As a result there's a concave area next to the bearing race from this rubbing/scoring for I don't know how long. It's not ideal but since I can't replace the axle at the moment I also can't see it really being too harmful when rebuilt. The race fits tightly and I'll finish reassembling tomorrow. Am I headed for trouble?

Pics ..
I doubt it.

That's what i figured, I'll try to get a pic tomorrow when I button it up. Thanks.

well the bearing race that you press into the knuckle is pretty strong but over time it could distort and cause bearing failure. you'll prolly be fine but its one of those things ya know.

Yeah, I hear you and am not really worried about the long term.

Is it worn anywhere that the race bears against, in other words is the hole the race goes in OK? If so and the race is able to stay put (it needs some gentle tapping to get it to seat right) you should be OK. If you can just drop the race in then you are definitely asking for trouble. Pic's would be useful.

The race needed the usual tapping to get it in, no different than the undamaged top. I think it'll be okay myself but needed some reassurance. I'll post pics tomorrow, I think a pic of what's left of the bearing should be interesting to some folks.

The Pic

Here's the pic, pretty nasty but it seems fine now, a whole lot better than it was! You can see the thickness appears okay where the race sits.

 That ain't nuthin'! Wait till you break a birfield or 10, It'll look WAY worse than that :hillbilly: You should see the inside of my driver side housing - I couldnt get a stock inner seal to fit there anymore due to chewed up birfs gouging it up

That almost looks normal. I wouldn't bother doing anything to change it.

I'm reassured, thanks!

That's exactly what I decided, no surprise it drives abundantly better.

As long as you got the right bearings you should be OK. Toyota or the aftermarket guys will have the right ones. Bearing houses will have two kinds, the right ones and ones with far less angle (almost like wheel bearings) which DO NOT WORK WELL since they cannot carry the load as well.

Take a look at the old race, if it's at all OK. The opposite faces should be at almost 45 degrees to each other. The wrong ones will be much closer to parallel.
