Kaon Roof Shelf...

Think mine arrives today - they DO ship fast. Making something to match out of rigid molle panel for the useless little cubby in front of the shifter on my pre - '16. Figure a little 3 inch wall would allow me to store a phone or wallet without it flying around. Not entirely related but certainly inspired by the Kaon attic.

Awesome find, @TheGrrrrr . Thanks!

Just received mine today, was hoping to have it installed for our first long trip in the Lexus... and I'm missing a bunch of hardware and can't install it
😢

On a good note, it looks stout, and their shipping speeds are unreal. Most companies *within* CONUS take a week or so, this was Australia to my door in the US in a few days.

These appear to be back in stock.

Thats too bad. My hardware was taped/ wrapped to the brackets that attach to roof (headliner). Depending on what is missing you may be able to get the nuts and bolts at a hardware store.
Post a picture of the hardware that you have, we may be able to assist with what you need to get to complete the install.

Thanks, but Kaon confirmed they sent me the hardware for an FJ Cruiser cargo barrier. I looked through the hardware and it looks like the most critical pieces I'm missing are the custom pieces that fit at the grab handle.

My shelf arrived Friday and I'm planning on installing it tomorrow - looks like a nice piece of kit.

I know it a  install, but I have a question about the statement at the bottom of the Fitting Instructions sheet:

"We recommend applying anti-sieze compound or grease to all bolted connections"

My inclination would be to apply a medium grade thread sealer like Loctite Blue to make sure the bolts don't vibrate loose - it would never occur to me to use anti-seize on them.

Can anyone confirm that they did indeed use anti-seize, and if so, why? Or if not, why not?

Inquiring minds need to know.

TIA

Yep - I'm tall and like to sit in the boot to change after a surf or boot up in winter... Somehow, it doesnt mess with my view out the back or ability to sit anywhere in the truck. Initially I forward mounted it but pulled it back to the center mount as that felt better.

The front panel afforded a great spot to store a light and the handle alcove holds a medkit perfectly. Super stoked on it... though solo install was touch and go for a few second when I almost dropped it on my face.

Many thanks, @TheGrrrrr for posting about this shelf. Finally, I have a secure storage space for my Bushranger X-Jack. The X-Jack is a great jack - works on all types of terrain and provides a very stable 30" of lift - but it is a very odd form factor when stowed that does not lend itself to easy storage while still affording easy access.

Problem solved with the Kaon shelf:

Got some time in on my diy version. Previously I had ordered the captive nuts for the grab handles.
Today drilled the stock hole in some 3x5” stainless steel brackets out to 1/4”. Bent the brackets 40deg to approximate level. Installed the captive nuts and the brackets. Note that the holes aren’t ‘level’ on the grab handle. I think they’re about 3/8” different in height. Current plan is to use 3/8” plywood and have one on top and the other underneath. We’ll see in the next episode if that works.
I guess the profile photo was blurry. I’ll grab another next I’m at the car.

Installed. Love it. I did choose to leave the vertical separator off the front edge tho. I like access from 2nd row.

PSA: Everything on the shelf becomes a hazardous projectile in a frontal collision. If you are rolling without the forward barrier, stow only what you won't mind hitting you in the back of the head when a distracted driver blows a red light and you T-Bone them. I have the forward barrier installed and I'm still going with low-mass items just in case.

Just ordered my shelf, great communication via email with the company. I also ordered their antenna mount and they combined the shipping, something the website couldn’t do.

ordered Monday, received Saturday
Installed in about 45 minutes, removing grab handles is a pain, the antenna mount is for a future project

It looks like you have some heavy items on the shelf already - might want to bear in mind that Kaon recommends a load of only 10kg (22lbs) for the shelf. Basically, it's designed for things like coats and hats - not D-Rings and air compressors.

Just sayin'

Nice shelf. I'd hate to see that shackle become a projectile though.
If it bust through 3 zip ties and enters my cranium so be it.

It seems plenty strong to hold a strap, a little viair and a shackle. The empty space will most likely be filled with groceries on my next trip, or possibly bricks and ninja throwing stars.
