I'm looking for some new wheels to replace the chrome wagon wheels on my 40. Being cheap, I would like to pull something out of a wrecking yard, but have no clue where to start looking for rims with the correct backspacing and lug layout.

Does anyone know of any stock applications (other than a Landcruiser) that used a 6x5.5 bolt pattern and a 3.5" backspace?

Brian

chevy trucks/blazers, I beleive are the same pattern as long as the backspacing is correct.

straight axle 4 x 4 Toyota trucks, 1985 and before fit. hard to fine these in a junk yard.

nissan 6 lug trucks also share the same bolt pattern and the larger center bore needed to go over the hubs, as well as all the chevy 6 lug trucks but the chevy trucks will have the smaller centebore and will not fit over the hub. and pbviously all the 6 lug toyota wheels will also bolt up and have the larger center bore needed.

now backspace will be the trick here, best bet is to take a ruler or something with ya.

I know my 87 Nissan Pathfinder the lug pattern was the same but the center hole was to small to find my 68. I would check to be sure first. I had planned to trade them so I could have the 31X10.50 on my cruiser for a hunting trip. Don't know about back spacing since they didn't fit over the hubs. The backs fit the lugs but won't fit over the center hub (semi floating axle).

Nissan won't work, backspacing is all wrong. You need something from a straight axle truck.

Older Chevy 6 lug will fit. They have the larger center hole, but not sure about backspacing though.

Never mind... You already know that backspacing.... I didn't read your first post close enough...

I have to admit that I hadn't thought about the size of the hub bore. Does anyone know what that measurement is for a 40? (I'd measure it myself, but my truck is parked at a friend shop on the other side of town).

If you want to be cheap. I would paint your rims. Thats what I did and I like them. Or go out find an old set.

Factory Wheels

Paid $60.00 for four (4) wheels - had decromed and powder coated for about $200.00 They are FJ60 wheels so fit is good.

The best option would be to take those chrome wheels to an industrial sandblaster or maybe a bridge re-builder. I stopped and asked a crew that was blasting the paint and scale off of a local bridge if they could do some side work for me and clean up a set of old rims. The crew boss told me he would ask his boss if he could do it. But when I went back a few days later, he was no longer on the job and the other fellow I talked to seemed it to be more important to hit the clock at beerthirty than make a few extra bucks.
Chrome is a hard-ass metal coating combination of brass, nickel, and chromium that is a bitch to cut threw. Almost impossible to do it with a small siphon set-up. Takes very high pressure and a very aggressive medium to break it down.

i went to SUMMIT Racing Store today they had old school white spokes, 15 x 7 for 39 bucks each, to fit the fj40's. Made by U.S. wheel.

Also what was the FINAL answer for spay can gray for painting rims????? color and brand???? THANKS

I sandblasted the 4 on my rig my self and then had the spare done at a shop. The one at the shop looked the best. See how they charge because it only took about 5 minutes per rim for mine. Then I used self etching primer and then a couple coats of what ever color you want. I didn't powder coat because it I get a chip I can just cover the tire and shoot new paint.

Where can one find wheels like yours? All I can find are stock solid wheels for early 40's. I like the vented ones better.

I have one set from the junkyard that came off and FJ62 and then two sets off a 60. I got one set locally and one I had shipped from a guy on MUD parting out a 60. I like these rims so much I have 3 sets. :hillbilly: One set is reserved for another 40 project. And then the other two sets go for my current project with matching expedition trail with matching spares for both. Also late model 40s have painted ones. I believe that Toyota still has them, you have to ask for a 1982 40 or newer or a 60 series rim.

find a junkyard with late model factory wheels from wrecks or Craig's List, these came off a 2009 Toyota tacoma 4 x 4 17 " wheels with Mickey Thompson tires, i have 3 sets of these wheels now. i put 2 on my fj40 just 2 see how they fit, they were fine. But i going w/ factory 15" toyota 80's slotted steels wheels, i picked up.
