poo polishing

second corner was much easier.....just cut off the ubolts and started cleaning the spring pack after removing the lower 2 leaves. the u bolt plate was in good shape once I got through 30 years of gunk to repaint it.

rear fendor looks to be about 3 inches lower than front (which still has all 5 leafs in spring pack)

Should get a better ride and will definitely be able to clear the top into the garage.....once it's all done and back on all 4 BFGs I will get final measurments for how much it lowered the truck.

progress?

well it's back on 4 wheels and im puzzled.

The rear suspension (both corners) has had 2 leafs removed and the new shackles put on. The tape measure shows 1 inch lower in the rear from tire to bottom lip of fendor...

is it possible the aftermarket, bigger shackles off set some of the difference in removing the 2 leafs?

I swear it still sits level or even TALLER in the rear:rolleyes:

pondering removing 3 leaves on front and going back to remove another in rear?....or doing 2 on front and testing actual stance with top on....thoughts?

shush just drive it

Measure the difference in the original shackles and the new shackles (hole center to hole center). Divide that difference by 2 since you are only lowering the mounting point on one end of the spring. That is how much lift the shackles got you. Those look like +1.5 or +2" shackles, so you got .75 - 1" of lift. Removing more leafs could be dangerous. Drive it a while as is and see if it settles any. Putting the hardtop on will drop it in the rear.

I yam I yam....I just dont want to give the top a military hair cut pulling in the gharauge

Sage advice gents. Doing front tomorrow and will put the top on and go from there.

I'd put the top on and see where you are then before you take any more leaves out. Just sayin...

Those shackles (HFS?) require a big washer or two between the inner edge and the bushing. The pics of the rear shackles show the gaps and how the bushings are not completely seated in the hanger. You will destroy the bushings very quickly the way they currently are. They need to fit snug - not tight. The shackle needs to swing with spring flex. If you over tighten them the suspension will be hard as a rock.
Take one of the shackle bolts and a bushing to the hardware store. Buy the washer that fits on the bolt and is the same or slightly bigger diameter as the big end of the bushing. You will need a minimum of 16 washers.

Lash good eye. I haven't tightened any of it down yet bc on the first shackle it had lots of space. Will get washers on it. Thanks

spacers

after doing Andy's compression and getting good news I worked on my suspension some more. As suggested by Lash I have another washer on each side of the shackle.(its on the outside for test fit)

These are crummy cell phone shots but Im probably going to have to put 2 washers. I haven't tightened the bolts down all the way but they are snug and you can still see 1.5 threads on the bolt. (pic 3)

I also did some rust proofing, poo polishing, on the steering gear.

The washers go between the inner edge of the shackle and the bushing. NOT on the outside edge of the shackle like they are in the pics. No need for the washer where they are in the pics.

I was gonna say something but..,

Would you yahoos look at my post again. Its a test fit. I have to do ubolts first.

continueing to poo polish.....sides and tire carrier, Hope to get the top done later this week....might need some lifting help Andy.

Replaced a brake line. Brake fluid and radiator flush are next along with gear oil for both sets of gears.

Thanks to Lash for telling me to salvage my weather stripping for the top....they are $300 on CCOT and Spectre!!!!
I used some mineral spirits to clean it....actually soak it and remove the old paint and rust.

The rear piece that links the sides was FULL of rust...you can see it in the pic. I sprayed as much rust treatement in it as I could and drilled a small hole to get all the rot out. I plan to cut some thin rubber to replace those little squarish ones that were totally dry rotted.

I found a driver socket, 21 mm is the perfect object for bending brake line to fit on the rear axle......:wrench:
At Rob's suggestion I screwed in one end to guide my bends and get the second nipple (insert jokes) lined up on the other side....worked great.
