nice build so far!!

running like a banshee!
as in being VERY loud and Screeming but going the speed of an old lady... yep thats about right LOL :)

I rebuild my alternator... its usually the brushes in my case ... mine NEVER come out as nice as yours however, its usually done at 12-1am when family is in bed :meh:

Although I didn't have a choice of going with old parts on the thermostat housing. I cracked the upper housing trying to separate it from the lower so it's all new OEM parts this time:

Adding some shine with a lot of elbow grease:

It's not a mirror finish like I have seen on some of the other builds here, but it is a lot cleaner than it was. There is still a lot of scratches and gouges that I didn't want to chase down too far, but they are shiny scratches!

Thanks Keith for letting me stop by today and check out your project. While your above pictures are great, the engine, etc. look better in person. Seeing someone else's progress helps to inspire me to keep moving along with my 40.

Let me know if you ever need a extra hand.

Lot's of cleaning, blasting, and painting going on but not much wrench turning. I did manage to get some done during this cold spell we have been having.

A little paint to help me with timing later:

I have been putting off re-assembling the transmission and transfer case that is sitting all blown up in the shop. I don't know why I am dreading it, it just seems overwhelming and I don't want to screw it up. Anyone want to put it together for me?

It is just more fun tinkering and putting together cleaned painted parts and OEM boxed goods while I wait for the next round of fasteners to come back from plating.

As in the clutch fork boot plate in the previous post. It is no longer available and I didn't want just leave the boot hanging so...

Luckily I had the inspection plate from the other side. Quick tracing:

18ga. sheet metal should be stiff enough:

Now to cut the inside for the boot:

Time for a test fit:

Whew it fits!

I didn't get the stepped studs that reduce down to fit the F manifolds so ended up drilling the openings with a 1/2" bit:

I also still have to cure the POR high temp manifold paint. Since I don't have a big enough oven I will probably try my BBQ. o_O

Ok, ok...I finally stopped putting it off and dove into the pile of transmission parts so I could see what I needed to put things back together. Everything looked pretty good even the splines on the input shaft had minimal wear.

First gear on the other hand looks a little worn and has a few chips. I will have to check with @Mark to see if he has any laying around.

Maybe this makes it easier to shift into first and reverse, a little less grinding? But I would rather get a nicer looking one if available. It looks like they are no longer available new.

The input shaft bearing (so I thought) had an ever so slight wiggle to it. The shaft had about a 1/16" play at the end.

But when I pulled the bearing it felt really tight and when I put the shaft into the loose bearing it also fit tight.

It wasn't until I did some searching here on MUD that I read it is normal and that the pilot bearing will eliminate any lateral movement. I will check the input shaft end to pilot bearing since I have it out to make sure it is a snug fit.

But since I have it out I may as well put in a new bearing if it is available.
