I'm a bit confused as to why you don't want to use a 13mm head? I realize in a full blown resto it might make a difference but any other reasons not to use it?
Because you never grab the wrong wrench.

Toyota did us the favor of using hex heads that you can identify quickly with one look: If it's Toyota, you can EASILY distinguish a 10 from a 12 from a 14, from a 17 just by looking. With those 4 wrenches, you can do almost anything on your cruiser. And that is why it matters to me.

Sorry to hijack portaltek, :)

So if someone like me is ok with non JIS hardware, what specific sizes etc are the most used in fj40's/fj55's? I would love to find a large assortment of metric zinc plated hardware that I can just pull from when I need a bolt for my fj55 build. If anyone can point me to a vendor with a good general assortment (nuts, bolts, lwasher, fwasher, etc) that would be very helpful! I am sure I would save a bundle vs. purchasing all of these from specter and I really am not that much of a purist that I need all JIS hardware.

Here are some real good bolt distributors that you will be able to get everything you will need. I would check prices and buy from the cheapest. You may also want to check Wurth, they were great to work with and the shipping was quick and cheap. Also check out the link to another threat that will help with quantities and sizes.

Well if that's the reason I'll continue to use non JIS!

I have owned metric vehicles all my life from motorcycles as a teen to all three of my current vehicles. I have never had a problem looking at a bolt head and determining it's size! AutoZone has a small selection of metric hardware in a plastic box for $6.99. It has all the common sizes and includes washers. Zinc plated stuff.

If you try to order a bunch of fasteners - keep in mind that the thread pitches are not the most commonly available at some suppliers. 6mm is 1.0, 8mm - 1.25, 10mm - 1.25 on most cruiser fasterners. Can't remember off hand if 12 and larger are also 1.25.

Also - most suppliers have only silver zinc plated stuff. I also don't have a problem using standard metric sized heads but I at least wanted yellow zinc.

I have the wurth JIS metric assortment but it's not yellow cad plated, its just regular zinc - silver in color and does not have the built in washer. The only thing JIS about it is the 12mm tool size vs. 13mm. The assortment does not come with all of the sizes you need just for a Cruisers either. Still handy to have around.

Best and easiest thing to do is to get a hold of your local Wurth Rep and have him put together a list of what you need.

You local Japanese motorcycle dealer is another good source, mine even has Stainless JIS for jet skis. Not cheap though.

I have to say, that isn't fair.:flipoff2:

If Wurth doesn't follow through, that will be the next place I will check.

Thanks

au-ve-co has nuts and some bolts available. they are often sold via other stores (the specialty local nut/bolt places).

still best source is stripping nuts/bolts at pick and pull.

I hate running into a 13mm on a LC.

Toyota uses them for head size as the JIS is one step down when you have limited space to work in. the 10/12/14/17 wrech deal is also helpful...

I have been doing some research and it looks like grainger has quite a few of the listed sizes above in stock....

Noah

Here's a bunch of the stuff I got from Grainger. They have a good selection of 6mm x 1.0 and 8mm x 1.25 in 10.9 yellow zinc. Their 10/12mm x 1.25 stuff is plain zinc and 8.8. Grainger can be a problem to order from online. They only want to deal with businesses so they will want proof of being a legitimate business. I would think though that you could go to a Grainger store and they would order for you.

I received mine from Wurth 2 days after the order and they are exactly what I was looking for 8x1.25x25 JIS. I will be ordering from them again

Thanks

where did you get that box? from grainger? what sizes did you procure, similar to the list above??

thanks,

Noah

That particular box came with a metric assortment (pretty much useless) I bought from MSC a few years ago. I've got a bunch of these drawers in cabinets that allow them to slide out and IIRC most came from Northern Hydraulics. They're pretty standard though and probably available from many sources.

I just ordered 6/8mm x 1.25 in a range of increments.

Were they yellow cad/zinc plated (maybe that's part of JIS spec)? Did you have to call Wurth to order? After a quick look at their website it doesn't look like they have an online ordering option.

Thanks, Ed

They werern't the yellow cad/zinc plated. I did have to call to make the order, they were great to work with and were willing to find what I needed.

Is there something that will show me what bolts SHOULD be on my FJ40? For example, I was removing the plate that protects the underside of the tranny/t-case and had to use 12mm and 13mm wrenches. The PO obviously replaced some of the bolts, giving me a mix.

This might seem like a silly question, but how do you even describe bolts? Grade, size, thread, shape, etc? What are the different grades?

Thanks!
