Tigerstripe's opinion is the majority opinion. My dad has been in the car biz for nearly 4 decades, and a used Toyota/lexus (or any make, really) that had every service done at the dealership is worth about 5-10% more on the retail market.

I think this is more reflective of the care taken of the vehicle than the quality of work done, but nevertheless, the paper trail is worth quite a bit.

Oh I absolutely agree that my opinion is the minority. Overpaying for dealer service in order to hang on to every bit of resale value makes zero sense to me. Especially when DIY service and independent trusted local shops’ service shows up on a carfax as well.

And the idea that we have to service at the dealer in order to keep a warranty claim from being denied is absolute nonsense.

I’ve also had very poor experiences from all three Toyota dealers in my area. I’m sure that factors in to how I think as well.

I just document it on Carfax with receipt photos.

I am not paying several hundred and wasting half my day doing it at the dealer.

Data. It is well known that there are failures outside the recall window. Plenty of Hybrid failures as well on both Tundra & Sequoia.

Well that sucks. I have two 2024 manufactured V35A-FTS in the driveway. I’m sure they’ll be fine, but it will be in the back of my mind during our 1500mi roadtrip in March.

It could be something that’s not even main bearing related… who knows, and hopefully we hear what the cause was in the coming days.

Even the 5.7L was plagued for years with the valve springs which would grenade the engine (the actual fix wasn’t implemented until 2014-ish after much trial and error). These pesky engines issues are hard to pin down.

I just wish it didn’t cost ~30k to drop a new short block in out of warranty… that’s the main concerning piece.

The GX550 are pretty common, at least around here.

If one failed its probably nothing.

Perhaps let's use this as an opportunity to discuss oil weights. GCC LC300s have a wide range of allowable oil weights, including 5w-30 which we may recognize from the 100 series:

Comparison of main bearing oil clearances for the older 1UZ Toyota V8 from the 1990 LS400, two UR series, the 2007 Toyota Tundra and the 2008 IS-F, and the V35A from the LS500.

Both LS400 and IS-F are spec'd to run 5W30 and 10W30. The V35A has larger clearances than either.
