My gearbox was doing the same. Change oil to gl4 synthetic and it should shift much better.

I like the Redline brand MT-90 but any GL4 will be good. Just don't get GL5
I had leak last week in my gearbox and I didn’t find any suitable gearbox in my area so i put 140 GL1 temporary. I aiming to fix the leak and put some lucas oil GL5 85W-140 for the heavy duty roads i go on. Do you recommend it or shall i look for something else with GL4. Also I found VP oil 80W-90 GL4 is it better for shifting than lucas ?

Vp gl4 is better. Gl5 doesn't have friction modifiers needed for the brass synchros. It won't hurt anything but will need to double clutch more. Gl4 will have it shifting very smooth when warm

Thanks for the response. I will use the vp gl4 but also one point, is it going to effect my gearbox the change of viscosity from 140 to 80w 90 ?

140w is way to heavy for h151 manual 5 speed. You will be very happy with the VP

Found this on another thread.

But I found gl4 to work much better then 5.

A small update on the build, I took the cruiser again to the car inspection after some fixing and it passed!

the guys removed the silicone from all water hose inlets and outlets.
New power steering pump installed.
Definitely changed the wiper blades.
And made sure the tail lights are fixed into place.

Some pics of the cruiser getting it's first bath in months:

I installed the swing back door given by PO but had to remove the spare tire carrier as the one I have was missing the needed brackets to attach to the new door. New brackets will be ordered and everything will be back in place. But for now I'm kind of digging the rough look.

As of now some work remains to get the cruiser fully back on the road.

That is very informative Wadepat2! I'm still having issues with shifting as I'm still using a GL5 synthetic oil. I bought the GL4 oil last minute and did not have time to change the gear oil before my inspection appointment. I'm going back to the shop and looking forward to try the GL4 Oil !

Always feels good to get the passing cert. I remember the headache it was to pass mine in Dubai last 4 years. Now back in US and going through registration here. Then no more passing :)

It does feel good, hopefully the nightmare of registration ends soon for you too!
Sad to hear you have decided to let go of your Cruiser, such a clean build.

Another small update:

It's almost another two weeks, work continued on the cruiser with some nasty discoveries regarding the transmission.

We had a bigger problems than a simple oil change. Transmission and transfer case had to be opened up.

So the H151 transmission design has an integrated oil pump that pushes oil through holes in the output shaft. Apparently PO never changed the transmission oil and every single hole was clogged and you can only imagine what that entailed. Also a ton of carbon buildup all over the gears.

Unfortunately we found the 3rd gear syncro had an entire portion of it shredded away:

Luckily no major $$$ damages, all of the actual gears are intact. A transmission rebuild is ongoing at the moment.

What was more shocking was the transfer case oil, just look at this:

transfer case oil.png

That silver color is a ton of metal shavings. PO installed the wrong bolt and tried to compensate that with a washer on the Transfer case housing and with stress the threads broke from the inside of the case, they kept on being chewed up by the gears for thousands of miles.

Luckily as well, the transfer gears showed no signs of damage. We are still discussing on what approach we should take to fix it as we might need to buy a new transfer case housing.

Okay it's been almost a month and I'm back with some fresh updates.

The manual transmission has been rebuilt!

Here are some pictures of freshly put together gears:

And of course the transfer case all put together:

Transmission and transfer case are back on the car and working smooth as butter.

Next we had to do some touch ups on the engine.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the engine work at the moment.

But there were some ticking noises coming out of the engine bay,
after some digging it turned out that the engine oil pump stator and rotor had to be changed.
So new parts were ordered and noise problem fixed.

We also had some electric gremlins with the AC wiring, Oil pressure sensor, and engine coolant temp sensor.
As I explained in previous posts, the AC harness was tampered with extensively and the engine coolant temp sensor is wired to it.
So that was replaced.
Actually almost all sensors were replaced on the cruiser.

And just to give you some sense of the horrendous wiring, checkout how some wires change colors suddenly 😅

But I did encounter the infamous Oil Pressure Sensor Issue, with the new sender unit in the pressure gauge is still reading high:
High Pressure Oil.jpg

We haven't come around to change the receiver unit on the dash yet, but some electrical tests showed that the receiver unit was working and pin motor was working fine. Anyways we opted to continue with what we have for now.

Also since it's a GCC spec it comes with a factory sub fuel tank, but the gauge is not working either, so we'll work on fixing that in the near future.
The sub fuel tank always shows empty although it's full.

Next the cruiser went for a long overdue wheel alignment:

Going back to the spare tire carrier, the needed brackets for a swing out back door were ordered and received.

however the spare tire carrier I have is made for the tailgate rear door,
it had a huge locking mechanism on it to attach to the tailgate door to secure in it place,
and the spare tire carrier for the swing out back door doesn't come with the locking mechanism as it attaches to a roller assembly and rail guide.
Anyways, long story short, we grind cut the locking mechanism off:

And then fitted and welded a rail guide to the spare tire carrier just like the OEM design:

Welding C channel.jpg

And there you go, working perfectly and holds the tire in place:

Spare tire carrier fixed.jpg

(Now I need an OEM cover for the spare tire)

For those interested in knowing the difference between the OEM spare tire carriers for the Tailgate door VS Swing out back door:

Both Spare tire carriers have the same frame,
the difference is in how they operate when opening the rear door.

For the Tailgate type:
The spare tire carrier latches on a bracket on the tailgate,
so when you open the tailgate, you need to first unlatch the spare tire carrier and swing it out of the way,
then you can access the tailgate and open it.
needless to say, this type has it's special set of reinforcements and brackets.

For the Swing Out Door:
The spare tire carrier swings out with the rear door,
on the roller guide there is a small notch so that when the rear door is fully open you can have the Spare tire carrier swing independently from the rear door.

As all mechanical repairs were done on the cruiser, and no more surprises surfaced, it was time to hand the Cruiser over to me!

And man how excited I was to finally drive out of the shop!
I'll be driving the car for the next while to take some notes and then come back once again to the shop to fix the remaining small issues.
Meanwhile I'll be working on refreshing the interior and sometime next year repaint the Cruiser.

I'll cut to it, and let me tell you Land Cruiser never fail to put a smile on my face, it's been a dream owning a manual variant of the LC100, and every shift has been euphoric.

So first things first, I took it to the Car Wash:

And then proceeded home to take a photo with it's successor:

LC100 with LC200.jpg

So it's winter over where I'm at, and that implies it's Off-road season as well.

Two days out of the shop and I took it out for a trip to the beach with my buddies

Photos incoming:

[Does size matter?]
The above photo was put to distract you from some rookie mistakes I did 😂

While the sun was setting down we were shoveling my Cruiser out of a salt flat:

Bogged down front.jpg

Bogged down HD.JPG

The car was bottomed down on it's belly and the more we dug through the salt flat the more water came out.
I tried my transfer case when I first got stuck and can confirm 4H and 4L were working perfectly, but it was too late then.

So I ended up being "tugged" out by my friend.

out and about.jpg

[Proof that I made it out haha]

But yeah, my car got tested well that afternoon and it passed with flying colors.
Put good stress on the car and it drove me back home with no issues.

Nothing I love more than a derelict Land Cruiser being given a new life and enjoyed.

If Amazon SA is anything like Amazon AE you should be able to find some great value Amazon branded all weather mats. I have a set on my 80 and they have saved my carpet a couple of times.

And I could swear they come back stronger,
Still have a lot of work to do but enjoying the journey as it goes 🤞

Definitely need to invest in some weather mats knowing it will be doing Land Cruiser things out in the wild this winter. But yeah just checked Amazon SA and they do have some nice deals, thanks for the heads up!
I also believe alot of our stuff gets shipped from Amazon AE.

So Today we had the car lifted to check for exhaust leak,
and while inspecting the under body, guess what we found:

A Easter Egg!

A key taped and zip tied with a Toyota logo under the rear tire fender,
And yup now I have an extra spare key.

Someone a long time ago put it down there and forgot about it, cheers to that guy!
