isuzu 4BD1T swap?! (1 Viewer)

I am preparing to do a 4BDT2 swap into my 60. I found a complete Isuzu NPR and did a 1/2 cut on it. It has all the wiring etc. This is a good way to go in my opinion.

As to the starter location, on the 4BDT2, the starter is at the 4-5 location when looking from front to rear. It looks like it will work out on the 60, maybe the forty also. The Isuzu engines also have a built in P/steering pumps that should work, and vac pumps on the back of the alt. The engine I have also has the factory rad and inter cooler which I will use.

I am collecting the final parts for the swap (manual flywheel if you have one???) and should start soon. I will post as I go.

Can anyone comment on any issues with interference between the Isuzu 4BD1-T and the stock FJ40 steering system? My 1982 has factory power steering, which I would like to retain if possible.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that a sagniaw conversion would be required, but can't remember where. This was supposedly due to the starter interfering?

I have also read that the Isuzu 6BD1 starter (possibly from an industrial application) can be used in place of the 4BD1 starter, which will rotate it to the 2 o'clock position; maybe this would help?

A couple of pics of my engine. I welded legs on the Isuzu frame so I can do mock ups, etc, and it allows very good measuring points for proper fitment clearances. It worked really well, and was ...cheap!

Oh man ! That looks nice.

Isuzu 4bd2t swap in a 2003 Z71 in the workx

Ive been trying to find a good adapter for the 4BD2t isuzu diesel to the chevy 700R4 trans. I found the isuzudieselswapers.com kit. I emailed them over the past weeks with no responce. I guess he is no longer making the kits?? I know of no other kits for this... If someone has one or knows a sure way to buy one please let me know.

Thanks

I have been exchanging emails with Dave at Isuzuswappers for the last month or so. My adapter is being shipped right now and should arrive next week.

Sometimes it takes him a couple of days to get back to you, so you should try again.

He got back with me last night.. He was kinda short on the email.. I felt like i had to pry to get him to answer my quesions.. I dont know... Maybe he is just very bizzy man.
Im wondering how hard it would be to just use the msa-5d 5 speed tranny in my silverado??
I know it has no over drive... i could re-grear to like 3:23's if i had to.... The adaper kit seems like a lit of $$ for what it it..

My dealings with David have been good and he has answered my questions as needed.

It's not cheap...but it makes a lot options available to use this engine. In my case, the spacer pushes the engine a little more forward, which is helping the turbo inlet tube on the back of the engine clear the fire wall, and it moves the turbo assy further from the brake booster. Plus it's one big step and time saver.

Not sure on your trans idea's, but for me, I wanted to keep the H55 already in my 60. I only need a few more parts and I'm ready to go. I may be able to start my swap in the next couple of weeks.

Post how you decide to go. This is a great resource for all of using the Isuzu engine.

The more of "US" who post their projects, questions, and solutions, the easier it will be for all of us.

I Agree with you.. Im sure david was just bizzy with what ever.. I got ripped on a adapter on ebay (NOT DAVID) .. I paid ( money order ) and thats been 3months ago, still no adapter.
Im just a little shy now of how i deal and who i deal with over the net.
I would really like to use the factory 5 speed npr transmission( msa-5d) . But it would make a lot of work for me. My other two options are the factory NPR jatco auto or do davids ( isuzudieselswappers ) kit and go with a 700r4 tranny. Im just wondering with a 700R4 how would i get it to shift correctly at nearly half the RPM range. Also how would i get the OD to shift on time... If i have to buy a high dollar valve body and torque converter its not worth it to me.

The MSA is a good transmission if you can gear to live without OD, solve the shift linkage problem, and don't need 4 wheel drive or are willing to use a divorced T-case.

the left gauge it's your boost . ?

Yes. Pyro is on the right, in degrees C.
Something isn't right, it used to hit and hold 20psi on an acceleration run like that.

I've been looking though this thread and a few others on 4btswaps.com and see a lot of good info and examples of this engine going into an FJ60. Has anyone successfully put this in an FJ40? I've seen a few posts of people who were planning to, but haven't been able to find one that is running. If anyone knows of any buildup threads for a FJ40 and a 4BD engine I'd love to see it.

Thanks!

Just an update, it's an eroded compressor wheel which has lost my boost and raised my intake temps (and egt's). I suspect from rust flakes forming inside the piping from air cleaner to turbo.

4BD1-T into a 40 series lancruiser hj47

Has anyone done this conversion on a 40 series? The 12ht on my rig brokedown a couple of weeks ago. I am now face with rebuilding my engine or replacing it with another diesel engine. I have looked at the 4btaa because it produces 130hp and 355 pound of torque with some twicking, but I think it is too noisy. I am now reseaching the 4BD1-T izusu or one that is similar in power to the 4btaa.

I want to use my current h55, 5 speed transmission mate it to the izusu engine.

My rig is rigth hand drive. If you have done this conversion what has been your experience? In terms of noise level, power and simplicity.

I am trying to make this decision in a couple of weeks. You can send me a pm if you prefer.

Thank you:cheers:

sound deadening in FJ62

the sound deadening project turned into a bit of a larger project, but was good to get it all done.

i treated the floor, the doors, and rear sidewalls, also the hood. the treatment included a sound deadener, a eva dampener, and then a mass loaded vinyl cover to create an isolated, and decoupled deadening effect.

this shows the three layers in place.

the results? it now sounds like a lexus, with a tractor motor. can still hear the rumble of the diesel, but has made it much quieter. when you shut the door, no ting. when you close the hood, it sounds like a safe. driving down the road, less tire noise, road noise, and the grumblings of the diesel.

similar on the doors, i added the adhesive with aluminum to the outside panel, and to the inside panel, then the eva, then the MLV.

while i was in the doors, i also took the time to update all my window switches, and lock switches to use relays, and avoid the power running through the switch. as you know fj62 have electric windows, and because the power runs through the switch, and begins to arc and deteriorate, the windows work poorly. simple cleaning up the contacts, and adding a relay into the circuit so that the switch is only the signal, and then the power runs through relay to the motor. much improved. i also added new window rubbers as this help alot as well.

I also improved the locks. only 1 lock would actually lock. so i ran these through relays, and now all snap like new ones. see thread in ih8mud, these guys did a great job of improving the 22 year old electric windows.

Nice revival of this thread. I had forgotten about posting pictures of my engine swap here.

Well it's been done since August and I have a few thousand miles on her, and all's even better than expected!

Read my link if you want the story.

Here's for all the 40 fans. 4bd1t hooked to 4l60E. Fun to drive, just need some sound insulation now.

zaksl17 can you give us some more details about your build? What all was involved? What adapter did you use b/w the engine and transmission, how is your axle clearance, starter placement, etc...

For those of us with an FJ40, would the 4bd1t and NV4500 with dieseltim's adapter fit? I'm trying to anticipate what would be involved to make this work.
