So i opened up my charcoal canister for my 1994. The FSM states canister that we should be able to blow low pressure air through the tank pipe. This is logical because you want the tank to vent excess pressure. But here is the think. When i open it up there is a valve under the tank pipe that consists of a steel ball and spring. Funny think is mine moves freely and clearly the spring pushes it into a position that PREVENTS pressure from the tank to enter canister. It is configured that the more pressure is applied to tank pipe the better it seal and prevents pressure from passing. Just really odd.

On a side note. The other line going to the manifold has NO valve assembly at all limiting air flow. That also aounds backwards to FSM. I am thinking of digging through my old carbon and seeing if there is a spring or other valve parts that fell out of the lid assembly.

Not a scientific process, but....I wondered the same thing when I tested mine. I put it out of my mind when I tried the prescribed diagnostic on the brand new AC delco one I bought to replace it and it functioned as described in the FSM...granted, a couple variables there, but installing that unit solved the other issues I was having.

My 97 had a valve between the caper can and the intake.

RC51Kid, don't waster your time digging through the carbon in your canister, you won't find any "missing" spring or ball. Those two check valves on top of your canister are set up just how Mr T wanted them.

I only know of one check valve on the tank side of the canister, where did you find a second?

On the inlet side of the CC, the hoses from the fuel tank connects to a valve, there are 2 steel ball bearings and springs in that valve. In my FSM for my 1994 LC, there is a diagram of how the fuel vapor makes it's way from the fuel tank, then to the CC, and on to the engine to be burnt. In that FSM diagram, you can clearly see that there are in fact 2 ball bearing check valves inside that valve.

I agree but only the tanks side of the canisters valve has check ball/s the purge side is unregulated and open.

What AC Delco canister did you get? Is it a Landcruiser specific exact replacement? Or just something for a GM car that fits?

part number vc 120
gm part for grand prix and others
Got one from autozone.

I swapped mine out with the one everyone was using in the other thread and have not had one problem since. Before I would get hissing from my tank when I removed the gas cap and I would also have gas spill out when filling up because of the back pressure.

No more!

Actually. Not the VC 120.
ACDelco 215-153 GM Original Equipment Vapor Canister Amazon.com: ACDelco 215-153 GM Original Equipment Vapor Canister: Automotive

But basically the same thing as the 120.
I was able to use the original bracket too. With a little bodgering. Def not made for the LC.

I'm keeping my oem in case CA smog has an issue with the mod. Will swap it back in.
