Is a rebuilt 2f as good as "new"?

I have an '88 FJ62 with 240K that runs pretty good and has a great body. I also have a wrecked '90 FJ62 that had 160K on it when it was wrecked. I would like to pull the engine on the '90 and have it built then drop it in the '88. Can anyone sugest someone in the Carolinas or Va that has rebuilt the 3FE? Thanks

its a fj60 but regardless that sounds like a good idea.

do I have an essentially "new" motor? Will it run just like off the show room floor 20+ years and 160k miles ago? Or is it not as nice as that? What should I expect?

From my experience, you can expect better performance and more durability due to the accumulated experience of the builder. I have a handcrafted 2F (Jim C.) w/5-speed and I paid for the performance but moreso the experience of the builder who knows the ins and outs of the engine. Sure, any shop can rebuild a 2F but why not take advantage of the niche engine builder? My 2F has better performance and no doubt durability from the choice of parts, technical expertise, and experience of Jim. (thanks Jim)

Mine has only a few thousand miles on the rebuild so like others, check with me in a few years for a long term report but logic would dictate that all of the improvements of a handcrafted engine are just that, improvements based on years of experience. Now that is value:grinpimp: improvements added to the initial quality of Toyota and you've got something:beer:

let me also add that just the fact that JC had worked the carb, dizzy and manifolds was a selling point on me purchasing our 2nd FJ 60...he had already done the work on another one we own..........thanks JC..........have a 55 with a spun bearing and would love to get it to him, Gary K or Mark W......if they wern't so darn far away :(

If you can pull it yourself, you could ship it to one of them. Or take it to a shop that will handle the removal/install.

Hey Cam...........the expense of shipping is a killer for me; the quotes I have received seem very high; aprox 1000 $ to ship and return..any suggestions on less expensive shippers?

that is to CA and back, might be less to Ohio and JC but has not answered emails or phone might be out on vacation or covered up with work....but do not want to make plans without an OK;

Well been bored at work tonight and have to say best read and laff I have had in ages.

I only know the engine builders in the states by reputation and their constructive coments on my build thread as well as other threads they have posted on.

As for the original question the answer is easy it all depends on how well the 2F is re built. A top class attention to detail job will always be better. It may not last longer as this usually means more power and therefor more wear and tear, but for sure a bigger smile every time you get behind the wheel.

To make sure you get a good rebuild you need to know what you want and your engine builder needs to understand you not going to have the wool pulled over your eyes. You need to ask qustions of him you already know the answers too. Or if he expains somthing you don't understand it is expained clearly in a way that you do. A good engine builder for me has not only be able to produce top quality machine work but also have the time to chew the fat over what is been paid for.

But I belive any factory engine is best made on a Wednesday:D

ok... so finaly! who does a kick ass job here? mark and jim?(per mud name?) Who else? Seriously! Yes! by reading all this I can clearly see that the 2f's weaknesses can be addressed during a rebuild thus making a better engine! Hell and I can bearly rebuilt my starter (thanks to fellow mudders) but can still see that a GOOD rebuilt one will easily last 250k min. My 2f's got 230 on the clock and counting! Sooooo.....

For the love of GOD! who would I call when my 2f blows up!?!? (i mean if I want to keep my 2f) cuzz if not I would call Iaintscared1969 for some v8 energy veggtable drik;)....

Come on guys.... Who do I call?

You could do central Valley and Talk to Mudrak..

Personaly I would pick up another full 2F motor, rebuild it and have it ready to swap in when yours dies..

Yup, rebuilt CAN be better than new... Same way as a burger can be either McDonald's or from the Ritz, NY.

FJ40Jim got his knows on!

You're in SF, right? Certainly, Mudrack is top quality. But if you want to get your motor to L.A. MARTIN DAVIDSON Automotive Machine, in Reseda, CA is the guy who builds ALL the motors for MAF. He also maintains their inventory of HiPo parts.

He did beautiful work on my engine. LINKYPOO

And to top it off, he's a really good guy. People ship 2F's to him from all over the country.

Did somebody say Vortec ?

I have heard mixed reviews of MAF's high performance engines. HOWEVER!!! I have not ran one myself... FWIW

I did not want to go the route of the HiPo motor. Didn't want to be tethered to premium gas, and really, what's the point of a hi po motor and not a V8? I went for stock durability, and asked Martin Davidson to build the motor with an eye to that.

Basically, what I had done was the hi po without the domed pistons and RV cam. It ain't installed yet, either, FWIW, so I can't say how the rebuild is, but from MD's clientèle, he must be doing something right.

But back to the subject of the thread: Find the right rebuilder and you'll get another 200K miles from a tight engine. I don't think anyone can disagree with that ... ?
