Hello all! My name's Mike and I'm also a cruiser addict. I live in Gilbert and own a 1978 FJ40 @ 74000 miles. Been a Toyota junky since I can remember. Also own a 97 Tacoma Xtra Cab 4x4 as the daily driver.

It's my second FJ40... Got it nice and stock from Flagstaff in July with just a little rust on the rear door. The first one lived on jackstands in my garage until I was fully frustrated with the mechanical and rust issues. I can fix most anything, but this was well beyond my ability. Finally, I dumped it and started over.

I have yet to take the new 40 out. Just finished lift/tires/interior clean out/herculiner. New baby kind of slowed things down a bit... Anyhow, I've been on most of the local trails with one of my buddy's in his CJ7. Coke Ovens, Martinez Mine, Sunflower Mine, Reno Pass, Montana Mt, Crown King backroad, etc. Always looking for an excuse to get out 4x4ing, camping, fishing, or Mt biking.

I'm in for the next Happy Hour... Maybe Four Peaks Brewery (best Hefewiezen in town) or Papago Brewing company...
 
Larry (fuzzy) here. I live in the bottom of the State, 12 miles fromthe Mexican border. A little "po-dunk" town called "Arivaca. I have a 71/74/78 FJ55 that I've had for a little over 12 years now. All in the past six months: replaced the engine with a 2F out of a 78, complete new clutch, new 3 spd tranny, new transfer case, new u-joints, new gear reduction starter ( GOD I love that), new 2 barrel Carter carb (gives me around 18-19 mpg), twin 950 cca batteries, all new tie rod ends, new wheel cylinders all around, new brakes all around, new seats front and rear, new "Autometer" gauges in dash, OEM clock from a "Saab" (don't laugh - it looks great), bunch of little odds and ends, and hope to soon start on body work for a new paint job. Drive the old gal daily with my Border Collie "Sandy" but only around the desert and surrounding areas. Wheeeee..I'll shut up. Cheers to all and please don't forget......"It's FJ not CJ !!" :D
 
Howdy! My name is Mark, and I'm actually in Texas, but went to school and spent alot (still do) of time in Az. Love the whole area...I"m in southwest Texas, so it's not much different...I just got my first cruiser...a bone stock 86 60..for now
 
my name is chris clark, bought my 60 last nov. absolutely loving it, turned 200k a month ago, enjoying how easy replacing parts is. im on the west side in north peoria, looking forward to a crown king run soon. am i the only one starting to run hot? is anybody else running a stock radiator in the valley?
 
I was runing hot in my 60 for a while.
Changed out the t-stat, fixed some leaks and got rid of the
questionable coolant. Now my fan clutch hardly needs to kick
in. Cruisin right in the middle of the gauge.
 
im in the middle of running some cleaner through it. it could be 20 years unserviced for all i know. everything else is new(fluids, thermostat, no leaks) so i may be forced into having someone boil it. it only heats up on the freeway, isn't that backwards? someone told me thats indicative of restrictions within the radiator, like 20 years of build-up.

A lot of us are. At 200k it may be worth picking up a new radiator, or as you said just get the old one heated out. radiator.com has okay ones but they're lifetime warranty for under $200 so once they clog you can get a new one. And shipping's only $5 to your door.

did someone say happy hour? had one day left of running radiator cleaner when the 4" heater hose behind the carb decided it had enough. the old ladies in the scottsdale fry's parking lot didn't seem too happy as i messed up the parking lot. i'll replace fluid tomorrow and get on the freeway to see what happens. anybody had any luck boiling a 20 year old radiator?
