I am looking for ideas that other have used to replace the stock fj55 interior dome light? my truck is a 1970, and had a round dome light, but my assembly is trash. Anyone have one for sale OR has anyone found any aftermarket or stock assemblies that look similar and will bolt into place in the stock overhead location.

Thanks!

Noah

no idea Lou, just trying to think up some ideas that other people may have used. I would guess that you could just pop some holes in the aluminum base of the light or maybe drill some new holes in the piggy area where it mounts.

what have other people used?

Noah, I think I have an early dome light in decent shape if you want to go that route. I think it has a 2 wire connector. The later ones only used 1 wire and grounded thru the body.

my dome light was trash; totally corroded and the lever broken off; this looks like a very nice replacement; how does it mount?, the original was with 3 sheetmetal screws!

Lou, I will have to look at mine tomorrow. It looks like the drawing. The PO put something like that in for brighter light (luckily, he still had the origina...he did the same with the side mirrors and the carb...too bad he threw the 1975 carb away two months before I bought the 55...He pulled the carb off in 1975 :crybaby: .

base equals 4 1/4, overall is 4 5/8@ 1 3/4 deep, but that's figuring to the high point of the dome and where the tabs for the bulb stick out

also, the bulb measures about 1.25, so that led light should work. guess i need to buy one.

thanks nuclearlemon, sounds like the one I posted above could be a viable alternative, I think I may buy that LED bulb too, looks like a cool option, I wonder how much brighter it is?

a couple of the reviews on that particular one were that it wasn't that impressive, so i just ordered the same size from ledlights.com, along with new dash bulbs.

if you don't mind sharing the part #'s I would appreciate it so I can order them to make it easy, when you mention "dash bulbs", are these on the 55? in the guage assembly? I am new to pigs and mine came unassembled from the PO.....

Howdy! First, I know these will not be a direct replacement, but you might want to check them out. My brother came up with these and has installed them over both front seats in his Cherokee. They are 12v under-counter lights from Home Deopt. Any hardware store should have them. Cheap and bright. They come in chrome or black, and you can get them without the 110v power converter needed for household use. He even mounted some in the lift gate. John

Noah, I think the dash light is the one that "shines"?? on the heater/tailgate controls and on mine it sux, end up fiddling way to much with the levers at night; believe trollhole had some recommends on a light source/bulb replacement about 3 years ago but I can't find the thread.......Marshall?
Inkpot, your solution sounds great; do you place them in to the original dash light plug?; ....my wiring harness is sooo darn screwed up from POs that is is scary to try to add something else!

in my case, no, it's the gauge bulbs. i didn't get any bulbs for that light. i guess i kinda like it dark, it doesnt' distract me.

Howdy! I have not installed any of these yet. I have seen them in my brother's Cherokee. I think he just cut holes in the upholstry and hot glued them in, and he buried the wires behind. These are too big for the dash, but they might fit under for foot lights. I think they are 3 or 4 inches across. John

John; please share when you install them; do they have a switch of some sort/rheostat?
Inge......yep a brightlight would be distracting but isn't the dash light controlled by the rheostat for the gauge lights?.........am asking cause my rheostat is inop and was thinking they were tied in....dash+ gauge lights;
