Fellow Mudders,

Curious what insurance most of you have on your built 80s? I currently have a policy (comprehensive and collision through USAA) on my built 80 and am paying almost $110/mo for JUST the 80 (even with a multi-car discount)! The 80 is no longer my daily driver, and I plan to drive it less than 2500 miles/year. Seems like an excessive price considering if the vehicle is totaled I would only get about $6-7k (have almost triple that into it). Any other ideas? I looked at a policy through American Collectors Insurance, as their premium was less than half that of USAA's (even with a stated value of $25k)... was fixing to switch the policy, only to find out they dont cover vehicles that are taken "camping." Is everyone else out their just going with liability only policies?

Thanks!

you could keep what you have and up your deductible to 1k, im assuming you have yours at 500 0r 750 as that is pretty common deductible. since the trucks 20 years old now what about making it a collectors or vintage reg, whatever is applicable in Colorado?

I have drive insurance. Started with progressive but they got bought out or merged or changed names. They were the only ones I could find to do a stated value of $10k on my 71- FJ40. Even though I got WAY more then $10k in it. For my 97 -80 I have full coverage & its $60 a month. $60 for the FJ40 as well. It don't make much sense. I sold my 07 tundra crew max limited 4x4 for $23k got a 97-80 for $3500 & my insurance is about $20 a month less then the tundra. A big WTF. It'll be a nightmare trying to get $10k for my FJ40 if something happens to it. Haggerty & the antique insurance companies suck for people like us! They told me it could only be driven on Sundays to car shows & crap like that. When I said I like to drive it to work & take it camping they all say HELL NO! They only insure cars that DON'T get driven. What's the point of that?

I'm probably totally wrong here... but, I was under the assumption from my agent (Geico) that once my 80 is completely built, I can bring it up to the adjuster, and together we go thru it piece by piece (keep receipts always!) and with that we come up with a "built value". I'm sure this will still be way under value, but hopefully we won't get totally screwed if something happens. Plus I'm sure my premiums will go up! Good luck!

I have safeco and they allow a stated value up to 5k over what they think the value is. It adds up quick though for each 1k value you put on it. I have wondered the same thing. Some people say you can get it appraised, not sure how much that is though. I would just ask all the questions beforehand so you arent surprised when they give you 4k for a cruiser thats worth 9k.

I have farmers . Have my house and two other vehicles with them. I pay 80 a month full coverage with 20 k value.

Thanks to everyone that replied, much appreciated. While I really like USAA, and they have been fantastic to deal with in the past, I really need to follow-up on the suggestions y'all provided. It just doesn't make sense to pay that kind of premium on a 20 year old vehicle!

USAA today isn't your father's USAA. They used to be a great company, not so much anymore. Shop around and find a much better deal. I have Farmers and pay $60/mo full coverage.

Thats what I was wondering... we have USAA and I feel like I could get a better deal elsewhere if I look around. For someone looking to insure a built 80 I'd look for agreed value insurance and go from there.

I have GEICO as well and they can do a policy for a declared value which is kind of like inkpot said. The higher the amount you want on it the more you pay. I'm sure there are limits and other such details you should ask about but it was brought up to me when the adjuster came to look at the mold in my Land Cruiser from a leaky windshield.

I agree! When I first joined the Corps in 1986 they were awesome! But around 94-95 they started going downhill. I actually receive the best rates from Geico, and I've made 2 claims, both times went smooth as silk.... had check in my hand the same day! It pays to compare.

Any updates to this?

I'd feel a lot better knowing my 80 is covered for what I'd have to pay to replace it :)

Check with your current insurance agent on the value for your truck locally. I did last month. He tells me it is $12,500 for a stock truck. Then I asked about upgrades such as winch, sliders, etc. and he advised to make sure you have the receipts and those would be in addition to that number.

BTW, I have State Farm with $0.00 deductible (except on collison, which is $100) and glass breakage and I pay about $925/year.

I'm still in the black on my truck, but just barely......

I don't own a garage that will fit the 80. Is this a problem when working with declared value insurances? I see on GEICO's website it says it must be stored in a in a fully enclosed and locked structure.

I have a policy with hagerty for my 71 FJ40. I need to get better insurance on my 97 40th anniversary, thanks for reminding me.
The only way Hagerty will insure my FJ40 is if it is in a garage 24/7 and you can prove you and your wife (if you have one) both have daily drivers.
Hagerty told me I can't take my FJ40 camping, fishing or pretty much anywhere. Can't drive it to work on a Wednesday 😅 I was told I could take it to car shows 1x a month or the occasional sunday drive to get ice cream.

I haven't been able to find insurance for people who use there vehicles more then sunday drivers.

If you're out at the lake fishing or wheeling somewhere and have a problem. Tow it to ice cream shop on sunday before you file a claim. 🤙

Any updates on this in 2023? Just acquired a 94 FZJ80 with a mild lift and bigger tires. No other mods. How much are you guys paying as premium for insurance? I did simulations with Allstate and am getting approximately $700 for a 6 months policy. Seems crazy to me, since this is about $150 more than what I pay for my wife's 2017 4runner. What am I missing here? TIA

I pay full coverage with 10k of add ons
So I doubt I’ll get my 40-50k investment back from my Cummins 80 series .. but I figure I can recoupe some ..
