i have to replace my clutch i think?

for a long time now when i'd go out in the morning my tranny would feel like it had cold peanut butter in it.

it would warm up and be ok.

then it started having a hard time shifting into 4th

it still has a hard time with 4th but also kicks out of 5th

i was going to get a clutch kit with throw out bearing and all, is there anything i should be aware of before i tear into this thing. (like bolts that only come out with a special tool and a hand the size of a ten year old)

the last two times i had my oil changed (i know i am a sissy for not doing it myself) they checked the gear oil and said it was fine.

i know nothing about the other let me check your linky and my truck.

:bang::bang: ( i am not mad i just love that smiley)

edit: and i checked the gear oil myself a year ago and it was fine, and it does not seem to leak.

and awesome link, i am going to check that as soon as i get home.

What he said....

Can you describe the cold peanut butter feeling? :D Doesn't sound like the clutch to me.

yeah it feels like someone poured hot peanut butter in and then it got cold. :D

i thought maybe the clutch was not engaging or the throw out bearing was going bad so it was just having a hard time getting into gear.

hey i am not a tranny guy.

( i am also not a motor guy, or a carb guy, or an ignition guy ) :hillbilly:

But has the gear oil in the tranny ever been CHANGED? It may still be full, but it might need to be changed. I don't remember the recommended frequency, I change mine way too often to know. I noticed slightly better shifting in my old '92 4Runner (subject of that link above) when I swapped out the lube to synthetic. But the new shifter seat made the biggest difference.

I believe it's 30K miles.

Sounds like normal 90 weight dyno on a cold morning syndrome to me. :D :D

i like peanut butter sandwiches with sliced bananas.
like the KING! uh huh huh huh!

this is a slight possibility, the clutch bracket can be cracked in the upper left corner.
but since your symptoms change with operating temperature, its a slight possibility. ;)

What you are describing sounds more like a tranny problem than the clutch. Drain and refill the tranny with the correct amount of fresh 75w-90. The drain plug has a magnet built into it. Be sure to examine that carefully. A small amount of metal shavings (kinda like sand) is ok, but larger bits could mean a problem.

ok here is the diagram the guy at the dealership faxed over. i hate dealerships but its the closet place to get the part, about 90 miles. :bang: (again i just like the smiley)

the part the dealership thinks i need is the #33548F.

but i will tear it down tonight and check the gear oil.

thanks for the help.

i don't know :o. i just always checked the level. when i first bought it i had it serviced, which include radiator flush and everything. but i don't remember for sure if the tranny oil was changed.

i owned and drove this truck for several months ( with no problems ), then sold it to my father-in-law when we moved to Okie land he owned it for about a year and put about 1500 miles on it ( with no problems ), then i bought it back when he decided to sell it.

i towed a boat back from Texas when i went to pick the truck up, and did not seem to have any problems, then i hauled a lot of hay this last summer. and in the last couple of months it started the cold peanut butter feel. i thought maybe all the hard work the little mule was doing finally caught up ?.?

Nope, that is not the shifter seat, that is the small bushing at the end of the shifter. I would go ahead and replace it, but I don't think that will help anything. The part you want is actually not shown in that diagram, they might not sell it seperately for your 2WD tranny.

Call Marlin Crawler, tell him what you have, I would bet that his new HD Shifter Seat will work:

Marlin Crawler : Transmission Parts & Accessories

I have one downstairs in my parts pile for the R151F that I'm rebuilding, it's a nice part, better than OEM.

X2. Got mine from Marlin and it helped a lot on my 85 4Runner. While I was at it, I also replaced the small bushing at the end. Got both from Marlin. Wasn't real expensive while I had it all open.

you ever feel like an idiot :bang:

i pulled my drain plug and guess what came out, about a cup or two of black peanut butter.

i flushed it with a half gallon of kerosene twice. don't know how bad of an idea that is for a yota ( my grandpaw use to do it to tractors ) but i figured at this point it could not hurt the thing any more than it already is.

i am going to leave the plug out and let it drain all night, then feel it up with gear oil in the morning. then run it a while and drain and re-fill again.

you think a judge would consider it justifyable (sp?) homocide if i murder the guy that i just paid to check that stuff. ( i knooooow it my fault for not holding the little boy's hand while he did it )

Depends on if the judge owns a Yoater.... :D

Sucks about the black peanut butter thing..... on the upside, you were right fromt he begining!!! So that's good..... uhhh Hehehe :D

I don't know about the kerosene, but if you fill with oil and run it, then flush again, it should be fine.... If everything seems fine after all this, you might want to change the oil again after say 500-1000 miles, just to make sure it stays fine.....

yeah it felt ten times better with just the kerosene. its filling up with gear oil now. thought i would drive it around a few miles and if it felt alright, then just drive next week and change again. that should be about 600 - 700 miles.
