Hi All,

I'm between these two colors for my 72. The hood on the left is Rustoleum Smoke Grey from the turbo can and the one on the right is Rustoleum satin Fossil. The grey would get a 2k clearcoat. This is just for decision purposes, The final paint job would be much nicer as I didn't prep either hood beyond hosing them off and shooting them. I shot right over peeling paint, rust, dirt etc. I keep going back and forth between the two. What say you?

Why are those your only two choices? Seems kind of random to me. What color is the rest of the truck?
They aren't. They are the two colors that we like best. Nothing random about it. I'll be painting the entire vehicle so the hoods were just for us to look at and decide on color before I start bodywork..

Th gray trucks posted here are gorgeous, but IMO you have to choose the right gray or it can be way too much on a large vehicle. The white trim helps. Shooting rustoleum out of a can limits your choices. The grays with a hint of green or blue are really hot right now.

Out of those two I vote the Fossil with clearcoat.

If you're not going to choose Olive or Mustard ;-), I vote tan. Tan has that 'middle eastern desert look' to it that is just right.

In 1990, a neighbor with a Jeep Wrangler 'Islander' in Smurf blue, said of my FJ40 '...yours just looks so much more at home in the outdoors'. No higher compliment could be paid. We don't need rubber duckies, goofy colors, and sneering plastic grille toppers.

Either of your choices are cool, but tan/beige was an original FJ40 color, and always more appropriate IMO than an offshoot color.

In that case, gray gets my vote. It seems to be a really popular color right now anyway. When I was deciding on mine I only had a vague idea of which shade of green I wanted. I spotted it immediately when I went through the color charts at the body shop. It was a case of “I’ll know it when I see it”.
