Was having drivability issues on a customers truck. Ended up being inconsistent fuel pressure, trying to figure out what this is as it doesn’t look like rust. Thanks, @cruisermatt for getting that tank out so quickly.

Hah- 3 fuel pumps in less than 100 miles say otherwise.I see no wrong.
Add some Seafoam and send it!
Tank was recalled in 1991(FJ60 ssshhhh - Toyota doesn’t really mean it when they say heritage program). Wondering if it’s that algae or bacteria the diesel guys get.I wonder if that was some botched tank sealer?
Bottom shelf Harbor Freight style.
Is this gasoline or diesel? I agree that it could be tank sealer, but it looks too thick to be algae. Was having drivability issues on a customers truck. Its gas- truck likely was in storage for awhile(years). Haven’t opened the filter yet but it’s definitely clogging things. Is this gasoline or diesel? I agree that it could be tank sealer, but it looks too thick to be algae.
I’ve had algae build up and clog my tank (and filters) in my Mercedes diesel. You can get bioklean to kill that. But it looked more natural and less uniform than that. What does the fuel filter look like?
I’m not taking a chance on this one. Will be going with a new replacement tank, pickup, sender and lines.Looks like shellac, old gas dried out several times. Drain/pump out all you can. Take out the tank, pour out the rest. Cap the lines, pour in a gallon of acetone and let it soak for a few days - agitate often. Pour it out, inspect the tank clean - yea. No maybe a better solvent - methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (very nasty stuff, read and heed he MSDS). You might want to take out the fuel level sender.
Does your probe allow you to collect a sample, q-tip wired to camera body
Steam cleaner, bead or sand blaster threw the sender
I always run non-ethanol marine fuel for this reason and haven't had these issues since.I’m so effing tired of changing parts due to the “new” fuel!
That’s the thing it doesn’t have the bad gas smell. If its old, carmelized gas you could smell it instantly when opening tank, does it stink awfully ?
If this were a personal truck that’s the route i’d try. With paid labor being a factor- i’m not taking any chances on this one. Some Radiator shops can boil out the inside of gas tanks to like new inside for pretty cheap.
just an FYI for anyone reading who don't want to/can't replace....
We were just talking about having it done and keeping as a spare for the next guy that needs one. Toyota was playing games with the recall being done in 1991 and did not want to sell to my dealer. Some Radiator shops can boil out the inside of gas tanks to like new inside for pretty cheap.
