I am yet again bringing you a Head-gasket rebuild thread

I would vote for not sanding them down, you'd be invitiing corrosion to get under the paint layer. If you want the letters to stand out, paint them a different color on top of the base coat. IMHO.

Good point aswell! Was wondering about this however do see a lot of others paint and then sand down letters without any issues it seems like.. I could do a light clear coat overtop afterwards too. Hmm decisions!

Anyone have any recommendations for grease / lube to use when re-assmbley of the head. Specifically something to keep the valve stem keepers in place... is white lithium grease fine? I have some redline assembly lube for the camshaft journals but I think its to light of viscosity to hold the keepers in place...

This had me weak in the knees a little... still finding stuff to keep me busy while I wait for this head! Fingers crossed next week!

Went through gasket kit this morning forgot to order 15785-66010 for the oil cooler... another call to local Toyota dealer! Checking gap on spark plugs. Old ones seem to be around .035 new ones are .040, I forget we’re on this form I read of someone else running this Denso plugs on a boosted 1FZ but anyways I’ve got em.. going to prep valve cover for re-install today and clean head bolt holes in the block maybe some other things, it’s friggen cold, when the day finally comes of my own garage she’ll be well insulated

You need 15785-66010 x3. Not just one.

I ordered two. Where does the 3rd go? Everywhere I looked told me just 2 were needed, incorrect?

Yes, incorrect.

2 for the oil cooler and 1 for the by-pass pipe that runs off the top of the thermostat housing and run along the RH side of the head.

Ok awesome! Thanks for the tip! Greatly appreciated, will call dealer and correct

Also, don't forget 15725-66010 the gasket for the oil cooler cover, if you have not already gotten that.

Yes thanks Onur! I did order one of those separately and turned out one came with the gasket kit I ordered as-well, so I’ve got two lol

The tedious stuff... cleaning bolts haha. Both manifolds are stripped And I’m letting them soak for a day or two with some engine degreaser on them before pressure washing. Waiting on a whole batch of new vacuum tubing for the upper manifold as-well. No parts today when back home, finger crossed for tomorrow!

Watching paint dry.. 🙄 it’s maybe a degree above freezing in this garage but heck better than outside

I would not use white lithium grease on the valve stem keepers. You want something that will eventually dissolve with the engine oil. I would use Lucas Red-N-Tacky 2, as it will be compatible with the engine oil and will dissolve with the heat and oil bath. White lithium tends to be much more heat resistant and doesn't "drop" as quickly as other greases.

Thanks man! Appreciate the info/tip, I did end up ordering some white lithium grease online but I think they sell the Lucas Red at the Canadian tire nearby, I’ll grab some from there! Cheers 🍻. Still on the hunt for some valve grind compound to seat the old valves on the new head once it arrives, no one in town has any or in the next town over!

Just grabbed the last tub of Lucas Red at my local Canadian tire, but thanks for the trip, amazon is great in the area usually only 3 days with prime! Went into this little hole in the wall fastener store in town as well and they had some ancient valve grinding compound and a lapping tool! it's my lucky day!
