Hydro assist ram mounting

No, the added volume actually assists in keeping the system cool. However, with ram assist you are typicaly beating on your steering anyway, so the benefit is not as obvious.

Oil only heats up in the pump..

That's what I was thinking, but was confused because of all of the people that say you have to run one...

I've wheeled for a long time and never had a cooler on my ps.

If you work your system hard enough with or without a ram, you will need a cooler. Plus, the extra volume helps.

I run the PSC external res with the built-in filter to help with the required fluid volume AND a simple tube/fin cooler as well...the added volume required for hydro assist helps spread the temps around, but you need to ensure you don't cavitate the pump by running it low - the external res helps that issue.

I was thinking about running an exterior reservoir to increase the volume. With my pump, I'd have to clamp a radiator hose on it and run it to the reservoir, which would probably look like crap. Or buy a new pump...

your 'radiator hose' volume fix is common, just be sure it's oil-resistant :)

Oil resistant? Wouldn't it take like 100 years for ps fluid to break down that rubber?

Nope- regular old radiator/heater hose will swell and weaken if in prolonged contact with oil.

Taken hoses off several trucks that were swollen from oil dripping on them.

For my external resevoir, I cut the top off a sag pump, and welded a cap with a 3/4" barb fitting in it and made a resevoir out of exhaust tube that is mounted to the DS of the radiator. Took what I cut off the power steering pump and welded it to the top of the exhaust tube for the cap on the res.

I was concerned about weld slag/contaminants etc killing the pump, so I installed an inline filter using an old 2F filter mount.

Your radiator hose idea sounds a lot easier. :D

I got my steering box mounted and the drag link adjusted, etc. I now have exactly 7" of tie rod travel, whereas before, with my 3 turn box, I only had 6.25. I'm going to make a spacer for the ram to limit the travel to 7" like was posted above.

I finally finished my ram, did it the lazy way and welded it to the tie rod after setting my toe and then double checking, It should be close enough to be good.

I think i im going to set the tie rod ends at opposing angles vs being at sam angle as it alows rotational movement (in the ball and joint portion of the tie rod end not the sleeve to tie rod portion) and thus changes the angle of the ram.
Currently it is set where the lowest point is perfectly level and spaced with tie rod end.

here is what it does when it rotates

TG had a set up thing on their site that suggested the same thing and that's also what I did to keep the ram from rotating.

ha, didnt even know they had instructions!

I decided earlier i was gonna go ahead and rotate them to help and avoid any excess wear of the rod ends by the constant rotation. just been rainin and wet last couple of days,
