An outdoor hoist... bizarre.

Still snowing big flakes here today.

It seems a shame to be wasting all these 80 series bodies. We chopped up the last one into patch panels and kept it but no one seems to need them.

Yeah, when I first moved out to San Diego, I would see muffler and repair shops with outdoor lifts all the time, very wierd. But then considering how many days a year the weather is perfect it makes sense. Even the lift company pitches in the lift is good in outdoor weather no issues at all.

Cheers,

Michael

no pics of the shock towers on my computer...i'll try to get some next time I'm near the truck. You will have to cut a notch out for the steering box also. I used a jig saw with a metal blade and it work good for me. I would have used the plasma cutter if the truck was a beater.

the lift sure does make it easy...the backhoe is more fun though. if you guys aren't saving the bodies why not just hook a strap to it an pull it off with another truck?

These were not coming off they were going on :D

Just spent the last three days, 1215 miles, and 48.75 gallons of fuel going to pick up the dash that I bought off Wayne.

First, Wayne was a pleasure to meet. He has some beautiful 70 series trucks and it was great to see his Troopy build in person. If anyone needs 70 series work done he does quality work. He also assisted me in removing some pieces off the dash so it would fit into the back of my Rav4. Thanks Wayne.

Took a couple of hours and it was stripped of everything. I will be able to use the wiper mechanism, pedals, heater, steering column, and a bunch of the small stuff. Some of the metal pieces will go off to the powder coater for a fresh coat of gray. The heater and heater blower will have to be taken completely apart, cleaned, resealed with new foam, and painted where needed.

And a couple more shots of the donor 80 series. The truck originally came from Texas and the lack of rust is nice.

Not a lot of progress, but I did mount two of the 9.00 x 16 STA tires to see how they compare to my 33" tires.

I've been working on stripping the 80 series wiring harness of everything that I won't need on the pick-up like ABS, Airbags, cruise control, AC, power antenna, power door stuff, etc and am at the point that I need a little help.

I want to use a steering column out of a 1986 BJ70, 3B with 24V system if possible and hopefully morph the 80 series wiring harness to the horn, wipers, turn signals, high/low beams, headlights, ignition, etc and need help identifying what wires on the BJ70 steering column go to what. I have a manual, but I just couldn't figure it out.

These all mount under/onto the steering column.

Worked today on getting the rear most cab body mounts mocked up. I used a plate of steel over the stock body mount and then drilled a hole in the top that is large enough to allow movement of the body mount cup. Once the cab is lowered and centered I'll tack the body mount cups in place. I also plan on putting a 1" body lift on to allow for extra room under the cab just in case.

These rear mounts will be the easy ones as the cab mounts for the 79 series are in the same location as the 80 series just only about 1/2" further inboard. The rest of the mounts will be more work as they will have to be custom built from scratch.

Super proje

Re-drilling the body mount holes under the cab would have been much easier, but I didn't see under the cab and that this would have been an easier approach until after I had welded the first frame mount. Either approach will get the same result I guess.

Rear most cab body mounts completed, primed and painted. Three co-workers are coming over on Wednesday to help put the cab on the frame. I hope 4 people can handle the weight of the cab????

Removed the stock tank tonight. I was hoping to use the stock 80 fuel tank on my build to save some cash, but the way it tucked up against the 80's body won't work with the 79 series body. I think the easiest solution will be to have a custom tank built that will occupy the location where the spare tire is. I would like to use the stock 80 series fuel pump, fuel sender, vent, etc... Extend the fuel feed lines, vent lines and wiring harness connection. Not a cheap alternative, but nothing is on a custom built truck if you want it done correctly.

Is your dash assembly off a 70 series vehicle? I'm also building my 79 "hybrid" on a 80 series frame but having a hard time finding a complete dash.

My dash is complete and was sourced from a rusted out BJ70 from Canada. There are pictures of it a few pages back.
