How often? PCV valve and thermostat replacement

Looks like this is a non issue. You can tell when a thermostat is not functioning correctly and that is when you change it per most sites I researched it's not a maintenance item. Same with the PCV valve. Fuel filter is also not a maintenance item, per Toyota, many have several thousand miles on original filter.

I changed my PCV ~100k, valve itself wasn't to bad, but the hose and grommet were swollen and loose.

Edit: Actually had Dealer changed PCV at 60K miles nothing wrong just PM. Checked PCV operability at 100 good, 130 good and at 160K miles grommet & hose starting to look weathered again, but PCV good.

Original factory thermostat & Water Pump at 165K miles, still in (knock on wood).

Changed mine at the 90K t-belt service.

My LX has 114k on the clock, just checked the PVC a few weeks ago. PVC hose and grommet were shot so I replaced, but they sent the wrong PVC valve so I just tossed the old one in an ultrasonic cleaner for a few hours in a bath of simple green and it seems good as new. I'll keep an eye on it in the years to come but for now I don't see a need to replace.

You're talking all of $45 in parts and not a lot of time. If it is concerning you, replace them. It isn't hard to do.

I did my PCV and grommet at 127K because I was getting blow by at the rubber grommet (the grommet was no longer flexible) - I think I paid $8 for the PCV and $4 for a grommet. The PCV was fine, but for $8, might as well replace it. I'll do the thermostat and gasket shortly since I'm replacing all my rubber hoses (with my heater tees) and will be in the area with coolant drained anyway.

I will do the PCV and the grommet next oil/filter change, why not. I did the fuel filter 20k miles ago just for s***s and grins. Will do the thermostat next coolant change interval.

When you do the PCV, take extra special care when removing the old grommet. Even if it looks OK, it can come apart when you go to pull it out, as it will likely have hardened and become brittle over time. You don't want pieces of it falling back into the port. I changed mine at 175K and it disintegrated. A very easy job but it still needs a little caution.

Thanks, I don't do anything anymore have a great Lexus dealer 3 miles from the house, they give me a loaner car for everything even oil change. I provide my own 5w30 mobile one extended performance. I'll tell them to be careful with the grommet. I'm 67 retired and get my exercise in the gym ;)

Toyota improved the PCV for 2003 and newer model LC/LX's. No more grommet. They screw in and look like a much higher quality part and hose then earlier years. Changed it since I figure 140k miles is long enough for the original PCV. Also since I am only driving short distances, new PCV parts and shorter OCI's are in order.

Are there one or two PCV's? I know there are hoses from each valve cover.

Bad PCV can create excessive pressure in the engine which can cause oil seepage. Worth changing if you have oil leak.

One of my other vehicles (not toyota) was burning a quart of oil about every 5k miles and it ended up being a bad PCV valve, in case anyone experiencing mystery oil consumption.

Mine was not using any oil but my mpg sucked and when I would drive into the garage it really smelled of fuel. Idle is now perfect like new vehicle and smell is gone. I would like others stated change every 90k just because. Thanks all for the input

This happened to my wife's subie. Clogged pcv valve blew a crank seal with the
Excess pressure. Just cheap insurance to change it. This is one of those parts that should definitely be OEM for the cost and time frame for replacement. Don't know if it contributed to the head gasket leak but happened around the same time.

Then there was the Toyota/Lexus 3.0/3.4l. V-6 nicknamed the sludge monster (My daughters ES300 died this way). Not sure the official cause ever came out, but most techs I spoke with told me they believe it was due to longer than recommended oil change intervals coupled with failure to replace the PCV valve.
