There are a few places that have trees but mostly in the north.

Here is another picture of the truck coming through a break in the rocks down a mostly dry river bed in the south gobi desert. Mongolia is a great place for driving off the main roads. That trip was about 2200 km and about 35 km were on pavement.

Also the chain seemed to tighten up a bit on the side that was extremely loose so I am guessing that it was making the timing vary at least enough to allow leakage of compression, but not enough for the valves to hit the pistons.

This would be normal. The chain should have slop when the engine is not running. Oil pressure tightens up the chain.

Mongolia has been on my list of places to visit some day. For some reason it just sounds like a great place to explore. That rig really needs to be put on a boat when you are done and brought to the US. Very unique truck, and left hand drive to boot.
