The Millermatic 211 is a nice machine, it welds ok on 110, and even better on 220. I plug mine into my dryer outlet. Try it on 220 even for sheet metal, use the auto set if your not sure of the settings.

Hi Larry,
Nice work on the repairs. My LPB is a '78 and it looks like it was never apart. Since I can now post photos, I can take a picture of whatever you need. Is it the front bed mounts you're interested in?

Yes, I would like to see the front bed mounts as mine don't line up. Not sure if different years had different mounts.

Thanks.

(Also want to see more pics of your rig!)

73FJ,

I have it on autoset right now. I'm using 110 since I don't have 220 in the garage right now. Now you're making me thigk I should get 220 in there...

I like it and think it is perfect for a beginner like me.

Bed Mounts

Here are a couple pics of the front bed mounts. Let me know if they don't show what you're needing to see and I'll take some more.

Thanks Doc.

It is great to see the original pads used to mount the bed. I have the "rubber" pieces, but it is interesting to see the metal pieces that wrap around them.

It is hard to see from your pics, but it looks like the frame mounts come straight up from the frame. That is what mine do, but the mount on the bed does not line up. Here is a better pic.

Does anyone know what years the mounts changed on the front of the bed? I think it is time to reopen this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj45-owners-club/481039-all-lwb-beds-same.html

Yep looks like what they did to mine. They installed the new mount next to the old to fix the offset situation. Just weld on some new mounts, you'll be good to go.

Another option might be to drill out the spot welds and move the brackets over to where they should be. Looks like it might be pretty easy to do.

Off With Your Bed!

I'm still waiting to get the top rail of my tailgate sanblasted so I can complete that job. I got a couple of tailgate stiffeners from Kevin as well so I can replace the rusted ones that were on there. They probably could have been repaired, but since I have an option to replace, I went in that direction.

So while I am waiting I decided to take off the bed. Lag bolted an 8 foot 2x6 to the ceiling and bought a cheap chain hoist and off we go!

And the underside of the bed.

So while I have the bed off I took off a couple of brackets that were welded to the frame. A big PITA!

Not sure if I am going to rip into the bed just yet. I might put it back on the truck for now as I don't think that I would do too much work on the bed this winter so I don't want to have it in pieces; I'd rather have it on the truck. I just wanted to create the system to be able to take it off whenever I want and this allows me to inspect the bed and choose which direction I should go with it.

Wow that PO must of been in need of some welding training. That bed looks pretty dang good compared to some I have seen. Honestly, if it were me and I had the bed off I would sand blast the frame up to the cab area or super clean it with a power washer/wire brush and brush on some POR 15 before winter rolls in, at least you will be done in that area with protection due to most of the road water and salts end up in the rear section of the frame. Looks good .

The welds are actually not that bad. They would have been made in the late 70's early 80's with a stick welder I'm sure. What you are probably seeing is the top of the bracket where it was lopped off with a torch. That does not look so nice but it is of no consequence anymore.

As for the frame... One of my biggest problems is that I am an "all or nothing" kind of guy. I don't plan on driving it in the winter too much. I might see what it can do in the snow, but it will not be a DD. Spmeday the body will be taken off the frame and then it will get the blast and powdercoat. Until then I think I will take it to the car wash and see what I can get off of it. I might do some sort of cheap, quick coating depending on how the wash comes out, but I don't think I am going to wire wheel it.

And I almost forgot to show off my latest purchase.

I got this off of Ebay. Paid like $3 for the can, and $9 for shipping...crazy! the lid is not in great shape, but I think it can be bent back close to what it was. Was looking at a vendor site and according to them there were two for the Landcruisers, one for the body paint and one for the Cygnus White. Put my keys in the pic for size comparison because it is quite tiny.

Not a real important part, but I thought it was kinda cool.

love2fly,

I just noticed that you had added pics and info to your previous posts about the bed mounts. Now that I see what your front bed mounts look like, I know my bed must be from a 79 or later.

Thanks for doing that. I appreciate it.

Your frame is in pretty nice shape, mine however is going to need some serious repair come spring....pretty much from underneath the cab all the way back, its ugly but repairable.
