Hey gang;

I just bought a second inside/outside temperature gauge for my HJ61, and it worked just about as well as the one that was in my truck already... which was barely at all.

I could see the numbers glowing faintly, and they read ok values, it was just that they were virtually impossible to see. Anyhow, the second gauge lit up when the wires were tugged and that lead me to dismantle both units in search of a bad solder joint. In my search I found that both units had exactly the same failure and also a very easy repair.

To fix the gauge display, you need to remove the unit from the overhead console and take the display out of the front piece - it's easy and straight forward to do, just remembe to take the small slot screw out of the altimeter adjuster before you get out the BFH to separate it all.

I'll post some pix, but the fault lies in the joint of a capicitor that sits adjacent to a resistor near where the main leads enter the unit and are attached to the PCB.

My pictures only show the back of the PCB, but I'll explain where the bad joints lie....

The first picture shows the display unit when removed from the console.

The second shows the back of the PCB

The third shows the faulty joint - it's the one in the middle of the picture closer to the top. If you look across the top of the picture you can see 6 large soldered connections, and then a 7th just to the right and lower. The faulty connections lie (in the picture) just to the left of that 7th large connection with the little tab sticking up (sorry, but I don't have a way of drawing lines or arrows on this computer - I can try to do it later for you or someone else can give it a try).

Here is another picture: a closer look shows that there are 3, and perhaps one or two more areas that may need attention.

Just a question... sorry i'm new to all of this but my gauge comes up saying -29e (for outside) and 18 inside. just wanted to know where the temperature sensors are so i can locate and/or fix them. Its a 1988 hj61 24v one. cheers :)

The outside temp sensor is on the front LH end of the chassis rail tucked up inside the front bumper, (well it is on my one).
I had corroded wires in the connector, which I suspect will be the problem with yours.

I re-soldered almost every joint in my display unit about 3 years ago? since then it has worked perfectly.

I don't know where the inside temp sensor is, perhaps behind the dash somewhere? anyway its somewhere that gets warm when you turn the heater on!

At the moment my clock / stopwatch sometimes goes dim, I guess that has dry joints in it as well...

Just went and had a look (in the dark with a torch) cant see any wires running down to the bumper (though it has a after market bullbar on it. Would you be able to take a quick snap someday so i can see what to look round for. I've only just bought it and haven't brought my tools back from work to start fixing and rebuilding stuff on it yet.. but that journey is ahead lol

When I had my hj61 I had this little thing I thought was the sensor located right above my door by my head. Going from memory I think I felt through the head liner some wires leading back to the console containing the gauges which didn't work. It looked oem this square little thing as the plastic matched my trim colour. Never saw one in anyone else's regular 60 series never looked for it in other 61's

OK here is a Pic.

cheers for that! i will get straight under the car and have a look when possible :D It keeps coming up on the screen e - e, and then -29 outside and the correct temp inside.. so most probably the solder joints need repairs.

Mine has the same square little mesh thing above the drivers head in the head lining and it does look OEM, i thought it was a in car microphone for hands free or something but didnt pay much attention to it.

Question regarding outside temp sensor wires

Did not want to open a new thread about that since people that post in this thread should help me easily.

So, a fellow mudder can provide me an outside temp sensor that look like the one in post 9.

I want to know what yours look like in a perspective of the wires.

- My wire on the "truck side" has 2 wires
- The temps sensor that I'm looking for has 3 wires

Except for the model (6X serie LC), this temp sensor is from a unknown origin (FJ62, HJ60, HJ61 ? ... 12V, 24V, ...?).

Toyodiy shows a large possibility of cross-reference with 2 parts # associate to the temp sensor : 83482-90A00 and 83482-90A02 (w/accessory meter). ---> I have the acc. meter.

What yours look like ?

Picture 2
- The temperature sensor I want to buy.

Any idea ?

Just had a look at my one, it has 3 wires on truck and sensor, but one wire is either not connected or is some kind of earth/shield.
The resistance through the sensor is about 1.2K ohms at about 20 deg C.
Not sure if it's NTC or PTC.

How can you be sure it is from a 6# series? The 7# series also came with the same altimeter setup. It was mounted on top of the dash.
Anyway these sensors were/are interchangeable between 60 and 70 series from the same production period .

The earlier models had 3 wires running all the way up to the altimeter(87-88)
The later models had their earth/shield wire going directly to earth on the left front pillar earth connection point.

60 and 70 series ambient sensor connection modelyear '87:

B-------acc meter
R-------acc meter
W------acc meter

60 and 70 series ambient sensor connection modelyear '89

B------acc meter
W-----acc meter
B-R---shield to earth connected on altimeter earth side(B-R).Not connected on sensor side

About NTC and PTC

NTC temp rises then resistance drops
PTC temp rises then resistance rises

Don't know which type Toyota used because i don't have the altimeter setup:crybaby:
Santa didn't have one for me this year.Still looking for it

I appreciate those answers. I'll give a chance to the sensor even if the wiring is different.

Do not expect a report soon ... my LC is in a restoration process ...

Now this is a good thread:cheers:

I've just purchased one of these roof consoles for my GX HJ61 and I've been on the hunt for both temp sensors.

I have access to a JDM Sahara here which had the console removed, I found the external sensor very easily:bounce:

I went on www.toyodiy.com and worked out that the internal sensor should be inside the dash next to the 2 middle air vents, so I ripped the dash out and searched hi and low, nothing :bang:

So since being on holidays I realised that this Sahara is Japanese spec and I was searching for the Aussie spec sensor.:whoops:

I've since checked toyodiy again with the Japanese spec and apparently the internal sensor is next to the drivers vent behind the dash, so once I get back home I'll be straight up to the block to hopefully find the sensor:steer:

So once I get it all in if I have any problems I'll come back to this thread to sort them out, otherwise I'll be ripping out the altimeter and temp gauges and putting in aftermarket gauges

Hijack
Now this is a good thread:cheers:

Hi spudman,

Could you check that JDM sahara if there is any seat heater wiring left .From the console to the seats and maybe all the way up to the footwell.Could use that for sure.Even just male/female connecters that match the seat heater switch would be :bounce:

End of hijack

Reviving an old thread because i just finished installing the overhead console altimeter/thermometer with inside and outside temperature sensors.
Got this console from a fellow mud member but only with the outside temp sensor.

Now you all know these sensors are like finding needles in a haystack,so i got an idea.
Why should Toyota use 2 different type of sensors(NTC) to measure inside and outside temperature, that didn't sound logic to me.
First i disconnected the wires from the connector which is attached to the thermometer.
male connector.webp

Then i started measuring and sorting out wires to find out what is what.Benchtested it and it confirmed what i suspected. Both sensors have the same NTC value. The outside sensor works also on the inside sensor connections.
test-3.webp

The wires and color codes and functions are,

Red R + 24V
Black B Ground
Black-White B-W Ground
Blue(2 wires) L connect to headlight circuit(dimmer function)

Blue L Outside sensor
Yellow Y Outside sensor

Green G Inside sensor
White W Inside sensor

It doesn't matter how you connect the sensorwires to the sensor as long as you don't mix up the wire pairs for inside and outside.

I measured the original outside temp sensor with 25celsius and found a value around 1Kohm.Found a matching NTC 1Kohm on a internet shop and ordered 2 to be safe(cost 1 euro a piece).Connected the NTC up and it worked.(NTC values are always spec. at 25 Celsius).
In the next picture you will see that both temp indicators show 9 degrees(cold garage).

test-2.webp

This is the NTC connected to the test setup with the original outside NTC on the right side
test-4.webp

So now i knew it worked it was time for some serious installing.

First i had to make a wiring loom for the new NTC and a protective end-cap

Fixing a protective rubber end-cap.
DSC05330.webp
Because i didn't have the female connector plus wiring loom to connect the altimeter i had to make my own connectors.
One connector for the 2 sensors and one for power ,ground and light.
DSC05323.webp

Then it was time for making a hole in the headliner and testfitting the console.
DSC05318.webp

I was lucky that i was able to put some wiring up through the A-pillar and the front side off the roof behind the headliner.
I had a original sliding roof wiring loom that i could use for the map lights and roof switch.

The round cable is a shealded cable with 8 coloured wires.Leftovers from work are always handy.
